We had a wonderful evening when we launched our wonderful collection of poetry for climate action! It was a fantastic evening. Thank you to everyone for making it such a success!

The maths of Arctic ice melting.
We learned that in every decade since 1980, 12.6% of the Arctic ice has melted. Can you work out in what decade it will all be gone?
Tasting new foods....
In the midst of all our work on the climate curriculum, we took a nice break and tried hummus with carrot sticks, pitta bread, celery sticks and cucumber. Most of us really liked it!! Well done to those who were reluctant to try it ...but then did, and surprisingly (to them!!) they like it!!
Making eco-friendly cleaners.
We are trying to decrease our use of chemical cleaners so we made some cleaners using natural products.

School Tour to Emerald Park.
We had a great day yesterday at Emerald Park. Thank you to the parents who came with us. We could not do it without your support.
Lots of adventurous souls here and I loved the frogs!!!!!
River sampling at the Camac river.
On the 18th May we went to the Camac river to investigate the river as ecosystem. Aileen Bright and Sabrina Moore from Globe Ireland helped us to take samples of the river water and investigate the invertebrates there.We saw flattened mayfly, waterlouse and snails as well as freshwater shrimp and brown caddisfly.
We were also interviewed by Nicky Coghlan and Hugh Fowler of RTE jnr Radio for their podcast, ECOLUTION.
GLOBE Ireland awards at Wood Quay Venue.
We were very ably represented at Wood Quay Venue by these three wonderful citizen scientists!!! Thank you to them from all of us!
GLOBE Ireland award for "Greatest example of Community Engagement" !!!!
We are delighted that we won this very prestigious award. We were shortlisted among eleven secondary and primary schools so we are thrilled that all our hard work has been recognised.
GLOBE Ireland nature based solutions to keep our school cool.
We have been learning about nature based cooling solutions. These could include growing climbing plants on walls, growing on roofs, growing more hawthorn and crab apple to provide bushy cover.
We wrote to Ms Morley with some of our suggestions.
The daisy.
We learned about the daisy (called after Day`s eye). Nóinín is the Irish for daisy.The daisy is considered a cure for sore eyes.
We wrote poems about this lovely flower too!
The river as ecosystem.
We had a lovely walk to the Camac river today. We took samples of the water and tested the temperature. We estimated the width of the river and the distance from out viewing point. We heard birdsong.
" The water was surprisingly clear"

What`s growing outside our classroom? 17th April 2023
Today we went for a walk around the school grounds, listening to birdsong, observing birds in flight and observing plant growth since before the Easter break. Speak to your child about their observations and what they remembered.
Here are some questions to ask?
What was the most common flower observed?
What trees did they see?
What birds did they hear?
What fruit was growing in the garden?
What flowers were dying?
Was there disease on any leaves?
Had any trees got berries on them?

Poetry.
We have been writing lots of poetry on a lot of topics. Have a look and leave a comment!
Our Science Investigation.
On 28th February, we will present our investigation entitled "Can we improve our flexibility and strength?" at the RDS. We have all increased our flexibility and strength. We are " less wobbly" doing "The tree" and some of us can hold the pose for more than three minutes.
We have increased the weights we are using from 400gms to 1.000 gms (1 kg) so we should be able to see a big difference in our strength.
We have also increased our toe touches to 40!!!

Peer learning for climate change
Fourth class have written and illustrated books on climate change which they read to fourth class today.
Here is what they said about "teaching" second class.
"I was really excited to teach them about climate change"
"I was a bit nervous but then I grew more confident"
" I really enjoyed reading my book to him"
Our question for ESB Science Blast is " Can we improve our stamina, flexibility and strength.
We are doing exercises every day with weights, we are doing squats and we are also trying to improve our performance time with "The Tree" pose in yoga. Our record is three minutes. Join in doing these exercises with your child every evening. It will be fun and it is great for all ages.
In preparation for Climate action week we are asking all classes this question , Can we stop climate change?
We are also discussing such questions as
What is the most Earth friendly way to fly?
One of our fourth class said "Don`t!"
Testing rocks for magnetism and for the presence of calcium carbonate.
We tested a variety of rocks to see if they were magnetic or to see if they contained calcium carbonate. Ask your child to explain the tests to you!
Friends of the Camac presented us with water bottles and rucksacks made from plastic which has been taken from the ocean and recycled. Thank you friends of the Camac!!!

Twelve days of fitness. Even though we are tired, we are loving dancing to the music!
Yoga.
Yoga is great fro body and mind: it improves concentration, balance, flexibility and focus. Sometimes the children will have it for homework. I hope you will learn some of the poses with them.
We are doing well with our "Tree" and "Warrior" poses and we love "The Lion".
Climate and Nature Summit.
We are currently tuning into this summit which is being run in conjunction with COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.
We are learning about the climate crisis and about what we can do to protect our Earth. We are writing poetry about this.

Manchán Magan spoke to us about how beautiful Ireland is and how important it is to protect our native plants and animals and to observe the power and beauty of nature.

I know a lot of children are out at the moment. Some restricting movements due to being close contacts, etc.
I understand many parents are at work or working from home and I don't wish to add too much to your plate. I am sending home some guidance on work that your child could do at home. Only do what is manageable.
1. Master your Maths.
- One set of questions per day. e.g. (On Monday we do Monday's questions and go no further.)
- On Friday your child can do the Maths test at the back of the book. We are going to be doing test 2 pg. 67 this Friday in class.
2. Spellbound
- We are on week 2. Each day take one block of words and make them into long sentences. ( more than 4 or 5 words). Remind them that their handwriting should be done slowly and carefully. Just as they would in school. They are in third class now and our expectations are higher and their abilities are greater than last year.
- Complete all the exercises in the week. Exercise 1-6 or however many are on the 2 pages.
3. Rome Project
- In school we will be beginning a project on Ancient Rome. I have attached PowerPoints with information which your child could read to find out interesting facts.
- Each day your child could read a PowerPoint and take 5 interesting facts from it. Then the next day reread and see can they find another 5 to write about. Each day they could add a picture also.
- Some PowerPoints might be too advanced for your child and need an adult for explanation. If this isn't possible just leave it.
- Your child could also investigate Ancient Rome themselves using YouTube, BBC and other websites (Under adult supervision). Write about what you discover.
-Your child could write a diary entry from the perspective of a Roman citizen. They could write about what they see, do and eat in a normal day.
4. Roald Dahl
This week we are celebrating Roald Dahl. There are books read out on YouTube for your child to listen to. (Fantastic Mr. Fox, etc.) I will attach a pack of things related to Roald Dahl. Your child can complete their work in copies or on pages. No need to print things out.
Finally regarding the First Confession happening tomorrow. Your child can complete their confession privately in their free time during the year. The confession is not required to complete the communion.

Revise the /or/ sound and <or> spelling.
The oy spelling is usually used at the end of words.
With the children, make a list of words which use it. Then ask them to make some sentences using the word. This can be done orally or written. The words can also be written onto the toy stencils (see below) like we do in class.

Revise tricky words - because, want, saw, put, could, should, would, right, two and four.
Revise plurals. Remind the children that a plural is more than one of something.

203 = (2 hundreds. 0 tens and 3 units/ 100+100+[0 tens] +1+1+1)
Again, please do not pursue the hundred, tens and units if your child is not able yet. That is work for next year.

You can print and cut out the clock pieces to construct your own clock. Parents can use the clock and move the hands. Parents may ask their child questions such as, “Can you show me 7 o’clock?”/”Can you show me half past 8?”

If your child is doing very well perhaps show them and explain ‘quarter to’ and ‘quarter past’.
After plenty of practice and explanation a parent may ask questions such as “Can you show me quarter to 3/past 3?”

PROJECT WORK
Children can choose one of the above topics - the pond, frog or duck, to do a project similar to the other projects they have completed. Topics to look at include what family they are from, what they look like, where they live, what they do, why they’re important etc.

Due to the recent forced closure of schools the children, with help, could do a range of tasks to further their learning.
The children may choose a project title and either complete the work on A4 sheets or fill a copy they have in their schoolbag.
The children can gather information using a range of books or through internet research.
Children should be monitored while using the internet. Kiddle.com is a good way to keep google searches child friendly.
The topics here are a suggestion only. Do the work that suits you, when it suits you. Most important, keep safe.
Twinkl: Twinkl.ie has a very good 'Home Learning Hub' when you log in. (button is also at the top of each page.) Choose your child's class or age range and then pick which topic you would like to do.
Some project titles to choose from and to work through.
- Recycling - (Different forms available, the importance of it, steps we can all take in the home)
- Construct a bridge, building, city from recyclable material.
- Country - (Choose a country, investigate food, music, sports, landmarks and other important cultural aspects)
- A person I admire - (Choose a musician, sports person, artist or entrepreneur)
- Animals/ insects/Spring
- Include facts, drawings, and anything else that is relevant to the topic of your choice.

Master your Maths - Each day (Monday - Thursday) Q1-12,
- Friday, One of the Master your maths tests at the back of the book.
- Revise Tables - +1 - +12/ -1 - -12.
- Skip count up and down in 2's/5's/10's.
Follens Online - On this website parents can create an account and access the childrens school book Planet Maths (first class). I would encourage parents to do this and to revise topics such as Money, number, tens and units.
- Get creative and make a game where possible.
- Create a shop at home and discuss prices for each item.
- The children should be focusing on 1 cent up to 50 cent.
- However Some children who are very comfortable with the subject may work up into the euros.
- Write a shopping list and add up the charge or each items.
- Open an Aldi or Argos catalogue and give your child a budget or write a shopping list. Pick items and discuss which coins add up to the total amount. i.e. apple 35c = 20c+10c+5c.
- Create your own maths worksheets using https://ie.ixl.com/math/class-1
- If your child is finding the work too challenging, feel free to go to a Senior infants worksheet or if it's not challenging enough, feel free to go to Second class worksheets.
- 2D/3D Shapes - Goon a shape hunt around your garden//house and see what shapes you can find.
- Draw pictures using certain 2D Shapes.
- Pick a 2D/3D shape - what items comes in that shape.
- Weight - Use a food scale to weigh items at home.
- Eventually let your child estimate before you weight the item.
- Sort items by weight.
Length -
- Measure the length of items in your house using a measuring tape.
- Eventually let your child estimate the measurement.
- On a page draw/write a list to sort items from smallest to largest.
Word Problems -
- Use Master Your Maths as inspiration to write your own word problems for your child.
- Google images has word problems, just search your child's class or age group.
- Some websites offer them if you good word problems also.
English
Spellbound -
- Each day the children could make sentences with the words in each block.
- They will put each word into a sentence. The children can also complete the exercises that go with each week. Monday - Block 1 4 sentences and exercise 1.)
Reading -
- Read everyday.
- Listen to a story being read on Youtube or Audible.
- Saving Easter. (Story on Twinkl)
- The Story of Easter. (New Testament - Twinkl)
Procedural Writing –
- The children can write the steps to complete a task or household chore. How to make your breakfast, lunch, dinner, brush teeth, wash our hands, play a certain yard game, etc.
Narrative writing –
- The children can use their imagination, use interesting words (adjectives) and write exciting short stories which they can be proud to read out to their family.
- The children could write a diary entry for themselves every few days, or they could choose a character from a story they read or movie they watched. Write a diary entry as the character.
SESE (Science, History, Geography)
- The children could continue with the topic of Spring.
- They can learning about plants and flowers grow in the garden and the animals we see in Spring.
- To continue this learning, Twinkl provides a lot of information and activities on the topic.

Project work - Pick a project, choose your subject, start researching the topic.
Writing Genre - Procedural writing – choose a task or game. Use ‘bossy’ verbs for each step of the procedure. “Rinse your hands.”
6. Gaeilge – Abair Liom – revise vocabulary and sentences the children have studied before. ‘Is maith/Ní maith liom _______.’ /‘Is breá liom ____.’ /‘Feicim _____________.’

Space Week
We have been overwhelmed by the projects that were brought into school this week. Each child and family made a huge effort which the whole class benefited from. We had an excellent show and tell in class. Each child got a chance to display and explain their project, art, fact book, etc. to the entire class.
We also had the opportunity to host and take part in a table quiz based on Space Week. We had lots of fun learning facts, exploring space, creating art, learning songs and sharing our new found knowledge of Space.

Thank you so much to all the grandparents who visited our class on February 1st. It was a very special occasion for the children - I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
For those grandparents in heaven and those unable to travel - you were also in our thoughts.

Active Flag Activities
We took part in 'Clonburris 12 Days of Fitmas' as part of our Active Flag activities before Christmas.
We are a very active class so we really enjoy our running breaks, dance breaks and exercise breaks.
We are experts now at the 'chicken dance' and flossing - just ask the boys and girls to do it at home!
Our exercises included high knees, yoga positions, squats, balancing, star jumps, running on the spot and lots more.
We will continue to do this in the new year because we know it is good for mind and body.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.............................
Christmas Concert

Visit to Clondalkin Library
We were very lucky to be given the opportunity to visit Clondalkin library recently. The boys and girls even got to travel there by bus! They had a brilliant time.
A huge thank you to the library staff who were so welcoming. Special thanks to Michelle Byrne who brought the story of 'Going on a Bear Hunt' not just to life …… but to a whole new level! Her energy and enthusiasm were infectious. Thanks also to
Mrs. Duffy who accompanied us on the day.
Some children in the class are already library members. For those who are not, now is a great time to join and to get the children into a life-long habit of reading. You will never ever regret it!
HALLOWEEN
I did not recognise anyone in my class the day we got the Halloween holidays. The boys and girls looked absolutely amazing. Huge credit to the mams and dads for going to such lengths in getting them ready.
MATHS WEEK
We had several visits from maths wizards during maths week. The boys and girls looked forward to their arrival every day into Senior Infants.
Clonburris Senior Footballers- Win Their Final in Croke Park.
Huge congratulations to the Clonburris Senior Football team who recently won their final in Croke Park. A proud day for the lads, their school, their coaches and their families.
Here they are celebrating their win with Senior Infants. Abigail and Sophie have brothers on the team.
A massive thank you to Mr. Murray who has been out every single day since the start of September with the teams,
Mr. Masterson, Mr. McGovern and Mr. Kelliher.

First Day in Senior Infants

Teddy Bear Picnic
The boys and girls went on a teddy bear picnic this week. A huge thank you goes to Miss Walsh and all the boys and girls in her class. They issued lovely invitations to every child in Junior Infants. They also designed lovely posters to advertise the event ........ and they made all the sandwiches for 75 children! At the end of the picnic they read the story of 'Going on a Bear Hunt' to all the boys and girls. Super job Miss Walsh and everyone in 5th class - well done.
A big thank you also to Ms. Morley for all her help with the event - especially for the very tasty chocolate teddy bears. Your help was very much appreciated. Thank you.
Active Schools Week
During active schools week we took part in the 'wake up, shake up' every morning. We copied the movements of the leaders on stage. It was great fun. We also took part in yoga movements every afternoon (the cobra, the t-balance, squats etc), as well as a yoga class. We also took part in a full day of outdoor fun activities. Thank you and well done to Mr. Murray for putting a super time table of events in place.
Junior Infants School Tour
We had a lovely day for our school tour. To say the boys and girls were excited would be an under statement. Thank you so much to Michael's mother Sarah and to Ms. Coughlan for all their help - it was very much appreciated. The pictures below gave a flavour of what the children experienced on the day. Although the boys and girls were tired coming home, no-one was as exhausted as the poor little donkey!!
First Holy Communion
I hardly recognised these boys and girls in my class! Their older brothers/sisters made their First Holy Communion. Don't they look very grown up?
Sponsored Walk

A storyteller came to Junior Infants
Wow! We had a visit from a story teller and he totally captured the attention and imagination of all the boys and girls. One of the stories was about a very rude pig - which the children really enjoyed! A big thanks to Ms. Carolan for organising this treat for the boys and girls.
Green Week in Clonburris

Grandparents' Day
Thank you so much to so many grandparents who came to Clonburris for Grandparents' Day. The children were looking forward to welcoming you to our classroom. You are a huge part of all their lives and they speak about their grandparents so often. You can see their excitement in the photographs below.
