Social Media Sites Explained
Facebook - Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites
in the world. Facebook lets you share photos, videos, links to other sites and
allows you to have online conversations with people all over the world. Photos
on Facebook can be copied and pasted onto other sites so care should be taken
when uploading images. It is against the law to have a Facebook account under the age of 13.
Instagram- Instagram is a free photo-sharing app for iPhone and Android Smart phones. It can also be accessed on any form of computer that has an internet connection. It allows users to add photos, tag their location and share them to their social networks. Users can follow their friends, strangers, news organisations and celebrities. Users can Like and Comment on photos (Good & Bad). Users also have the option to share their Instagrammed photos to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr & Tumblr.
Viber - Viber is a mobile application that allows you to make phone calls and send text messages to all other Viber users for free! Viber is available over WiFi or 3G. Once you install Viber, you can use it to talk and message as much as you want. You can also call any number that doesn't have Viber at low rates. As it is free it is very popular with young people.
Snapchat - Snapchat is a photo messaging application available for all smartphones and iPhones. Users take photographs and videos which can be annotated and sent to other users.But unlike other photo-sharing apps like Instagram, each ‘Snap’ has a life expectancy of between 1 and 10 seconds, after which they disappear. Snapchat has become a prime place for cyber bullies to send images from as they believe that the images will self destruct after 10 seconds. Although Snaps are supposed to self-destruct, it is possible to take a screenshot of a snap in the few seconds it’s on screen. It is reported that Snapchat photos do not disappear entirely and can be retrieved from mobile devices with some hacking.
KiK - is an instant messaging application for mobile devices. The app is available on smartphones, iPhones, iPods and PCs. It is free to download, it is free to transmit and receive messages, a feature that appeals to individuals looking to avoid text messaging rates set by phone service providers. Kik offers swift text messaging service and also allows users to share photos, sketches, voice messages, and other content. iTunes has a recommended age use of 17.
