We do a combination of yoga, meditation, balance exercises , stretching and dancing in the hall and go out to the field to have races, run, sprint and walk. Our yoga poses are really getting better.!!! We know the warrior, the cobra, the lion, the bow and the tree.

Geography.
We are learning about the 50 states of America and about central and South America. We are using atlas and maps to find out about political and physical geography. Please ask your child questions about what they are doing. In that way, they will consolidate their learning and they might teach you some things you don`t know too!!

Geography.
For the next two/three weeks we will be learning about the countries of the European Union and the children will be doing individual projects on a country of their choice. We will be researching the geography of the country, its history, culture, music, food and drink as well as its important cities, landmarks etc. Any postcards, photographs, books, recipes, money from E.U countries would be great and they will be returned when the topic is complete.

Our theme for the next two/three weeks will be "The Sixties". We will be learning about important events, historical figures, music and songs from this time. If you have any photographs, books, artefacts from this time, I would be grateful for them and I will return them when we have completed the topic.
Grow in Love.
We will be doing a lesson from "Grow in Love " every Monday. The children will then take these books home and return them on Friday. Please help your child to learn the prayers and chat with them about the lessons. We will be reading from the Old Testament and the new Testament so if you have a Bible at home, perhaps you could read the stories mentioned in "Grow in Love"

Welcome back everyone after our very extended "holiday". It is lovely to be back and even though things are somewhat strange...sitting in our pods, doing a lot of sanitising, having separate playtimes and lunchbreaks,(and me wearing a facemask!) I think we are all doing our best to keep our spirits up!!
All the tables are covered in oilcloth to make them easier to clean.
Two of the pupils in our class have a new baby so congratulations to them!!!
We have been learning lots of fascinating facts about the brain, doing lots of experiments on plants and today we had our first P.E lesson. The children really participated well and then they took turns to teach their own groups. They were great!!

One thing I have noticed about being in lockdown is how I can hear the birds singing. It is lovely to listen to and makes me appreciate the beauty around us.
Perhaps this week, in addition to continuing the work on lighthouses, you could write a prayer or a poem or a story about something positive that has happened to you while you have not been at school.Thank you for sending me in work; I particularly like the lighthouses you have created.

There are lots of interesting words in the story (e.g. brazen, ingenious, consolingly). Can you find any words that you don't know and write a definition of them?
Mr Grinling is an 'industrious' lighthouse keeper. What does this mean? Can you think of any words that mean the same thing? Write a recipe for something that might go into Mr Grinling's lunch. Write a set of instructions that teach someone how to make a delicious sandwich for Mr Grinling's lunch. The lighthouse keeper's lunch is 'delicious'. Can you think of any synonyms? Can you think of any antonyms?
Retell the story from the point of view of one of the seagulls.
The seagulls are 'scavenging'. What does this mean?
The lunch was 'devoured' by by the seagulls. Can you make a list of words which show different ways that people can eat their food?
Write a new story about Fred, Tom and Bert (the seagulls) and an adventure that they might have.

Today , Thursday the 30th of April is the day dedicated to poetry in Ireland. The theme for this event is "There will be time" If you would like to write a poem about this, please do. GOAL changemakers winners!
We are delighted to announce that we are the Leinster winners of the GOAL changemakers awards. I am so proud of my class and the hard work they do. Many congratulations to all. Our prize is a trip to the W5 in Belfast. To see our wonderful work go to

We are #changemakers.
We entered the GOAL changemakers awards before Christmas and we are awaiting the results. We learned about people who were changemakers including Wangarai Mathai and Malala Yousafzai. We focused on informing people about trying to use less plastic and to make other changes to stop climate change. We did lots of Art and we made up a rap and a song .
Christmas preparations in third class.
We made orange pomanders, studded with cloves. They smelled delicious! We also made chocolates using #Fairtrade chocolate and a range of toppings. The best part was licking the bowls afterwards.
We read " A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. We wish everyone a great Christmas.

We put in a superb performance at the Christmas concert. We were just brilliant.

We had a great time being maths detectives solving crimes, working out who was the robber, what was the value of the jewellery he stole and where he was caught. We had great fun too!! Thank you to Roberta from the Rediscovery Centre who provided the workshop.

What foods contain carbohydrate?
We used iodine to test foods. It stained the foods black. We discovered that pancakes contain carbohydrate.
Science in third class.
We asked the question: Is salt a preservative?
We sliced an apple and placed salt on it. The apple lost moisture and did not go brown so we concluded that it is a preservative.
On Friday we made geodes. We made a super saturated solution with sugar and hot water. Then we placed it in eggshells and waited to see what would happen.

Welcome back to school to all the boys and girls! We've had a busy September, we have started off the year learning about Europe and we even did projects on Italy! We discussed different types of homes around the world, read 'Fantastic Mr. Fox', and we even were 'Ag canadh sa bháisteach'!

We had two musicians in today who talked about traditional Irish music. They told us about their instruments and we sang songs such as 'I'll Tell Me Ma' and 'Molly Malone'.

School Tour
We went to Lullymore farm on our school tour. We drove on a bus and it took us 45 or 50 minutes. We saw chickens, horses, llamas, pigs, deer and goats. We went on a train through the forest. We went to a thatched roof cottage and a dirt house. We went for a fairy walk and we saw a fairy village. We had lunch and then we went to funky forest and a playground outside. I played golf and I had a ride on the zip line!

Competition Winners
Alexa, Alisia, Daniel & Abigail were all shortlisted for prizes after entering the South Dublin County Council Social Inclusion Unit's European Week against Racism. They were invited to a prize-giving ceremony in South Dublin County Council.

We created electrical circuits by connecting up the wires, a battery and a light bulb. We were able to tell if it had worked if our light bulb lit up, it was very tricky!

We had fun with magnets, testing out materials that are magnetic and what materials magnets can work through. We even managed to create our own magnets by magnetising a scissors with our magnets!

Christmas Week 2017
Oh My- What a week!! Firstly a big well done to all the boys and girls in 1st Class who performed during the Christmas Nativity, everyone was brilliant!
We have had a busy week of work from creating some Christmas art, practising singing 'Rudolf an Fia Rua' and even writing stories about Santa's Lost Sleigh!
We even managed to squeeze in a visit from the Sam Maguire and Jim Gavin, we gave them a big welcome back to Clonburris.
On Friday we had a little party to celebrate Christmas and some of the children's elves very kindly decided to drop off some Christmas Crackers, we had great fun!

I just wanted to say to say a HUGE thank you to the boys and girls for being so good and SUPER workers since the start of the year :) I have very much enjoyed getting to know each and every one of your little personalities!! I will definitely miss you all, buuuuuut I will still see you all of the time in school and out on the yard!! We had a great last day together having a party in the classroom and all of the children won awards to take home :)

We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Sam Maguire and Jim Gavin into the school on Thursday :) The children were in awe of the cup as you can see from the photographs!! As a past pupil of Clonburris, Mrs. Ryan welcomed Jim to the stage!! Jim told the children that they should always dream BIG!! A great message for the youngsters who adored him!!

Christmas Concert
The boys and girls were absolutely FANTASTIC in their Christmas Concert this year!! The audience loved their scene and when we got off the stage, we wanted to get back up and do it again!!

Santa's journey
from the North Pole
We were thinking about Santa's long trip around the world on Christmas Eve and it got us thinking, he must see lots of great things on his way to our houses! The children got busy making a map of Santa's journey and the things that he might see :)

Aistear - Winter theme
In Aistear this week, we are imagining that our classroom is outdoors in the Winter. One area, the children get the chance to imagine what a real igloo might be like (except maybe warmer) in our igloo tent. The children can pretend to be eskimos and practice new words on the chalk board. Another area is the Puppet Show, where the children are having lots of fun putting on shows for their classmates. There are puppets of snowmen, Robin Red Breast and children having snow ball fights and more. Another area is Lego where the children are building a Winter Wonderland full of snow (cotton wool). We are having great fun with Aistear this week :)

Aistear - Houses and homes
In Aistear this week, we had great fun :) There were four different play areas, all set around the theme of houses and homes. The children participated role-play, cooking the dinner, washing up, feeding the baby, changing the baby, making the bed, watching the television. They also had a water area where they washed the dishes for teacher and dried them, there was great fun with the soap and bubbles in this area. Another station was Lego so the children were building different homes in their community. The last station was the Post office, where the children had the opportunity to write a letter to someone who doesn't live in their home with them and send it off in an envelope into our very own postbox :)
What we did this week...
We had a very busy week this week coming back after the midterm break!! It was great to see all of the happy faces come through the door each day!! This week we were learning all about different homes. We read the story The Three Little Pigs and then the children had to place pictures from the story in the correct order! This is great for oral language development and also Maths, as the children are focusing on ordinal numbers, using words like first, second, last.
We also did some great work on the 5 senses. The children walked around the room to each sense station testing their senses of touch, sight, hearing, smelling and tasting. It was a no-brainer that all of the children enjoyed the tasting station which included some chocolate tasting.
The children painted their own homes in Art this week. We have some budding artists in this class, take a look at our work next time you're in Room 5 :)

Oíche Shamhna shona daoibh!!! We had a great week this week looking forward to the Halloween celebrations. The children took part in a Halloween parade in the P.E hall where we walked around the hall so that everybody could see our lovely costumes!! Well done to everybody, it was a great day!!

What we did this week...
We got up to lots of fun activities this week!! We were learning all about the dangers of Halloween night in SPHE and the children were able to walk around the room looking at pictures and discussing how we could stay safe on Halloween night. We also learned lots of new things about trees and the different parts of trees. The children made their own trees out of cardboard, wool and cotton wool in groups. The children also got to experience some old clothes in History, where we sorted clothes into two piles long ago and now. We had great fun this week :)

In Science this week, we investigated what kinds of materials are waterproof. We were trying to build a roof for our teddy Lucy's house and the children decided that the cling film and tinfoil were the best options as the water did not change these materials :)
Aistear this week
Halloween
In Aistear this week, we set up a Halloween Fancy Dress Shop in our classroom. The children can go over here and play in the shop, promoting oral language development. The children were also building a scary Halloween town with Lego and spiders, as well as our Play Doh Pumpkin Patch where the children made as many pumpkins as they could.

Our scary Halloween Bats!!
Hallowe'en Clay Art
This week, the children had the chance to use clay to make sculptures of different Halloween characters. They made pumpkins and ghosts and some even made their clay into the shape of a witch's hat. We had great fun and the children got messy with the clay, pinching and rolling it and carving out faces for pumpkins. We gave Michaelangelo a run for his money :)
We are going to wait for the clay to dry before we paint them next week.

The Gruffalo's Child
We read the story of The Gruffalo's Child and this week the children had to sequence the story in order from start to finish. We really loved this book and so the children had to work together to decide what came first and then last. We had great fun with this activity :)
b and d hunt
The children took part in a letter hunt around the room this week! We were looking only for b's and d's as these are two letters that look very similar!! We did really well and it was great fun looking for the hidden letters around the room. We are getting better at our b's and d's :)
W.O.W
We had our first Walk to school on Wednesday this week. Well done to all of the children and parents from my class that came to Lidl in the wind and rain to walk to school. It was a very wet day but we had lots of fun together! We can't wait for the next one :)

We can tell the time
The children are learning to tell the time, and this week we learned that if the tall hand is pointing to twelve it means o' clock! We did great work all week at finding out what time we have our different lessons at, what time our lunch is at and so on. We even managed to figure out a tricky worksheet from teacher, everybody got all of the times correct, we are brilliant Mathematicians!!
Autumn is here!!
All of the Senior Infants went on an Autumn walk around the school looking for things that we can see in Autumn. We found some great things and the children drew terrific pictures with their partners. The children also made leaf rubbings using leaves that we all collected for our Sacred Space.

Aistear
We started doing Aistear in our classroom this week!! Each morning, 4 mornings a week we will be participating in Aistear. Aistear is the early childhood curriculum for all children from birth to 6 years old. The children absolutely love it and it's a great way to give them a chance to freely move about the room and participate in learning experiences without even realising it. Each fortnight we will explore a different theme!! Be sure to talk to your children about what they did in Aistear each day :)

Aon dó trí...
The children are doing great with their Irish! They are getting better and better at naming the colours, numbers and animals. This is their great work from this week, where everybody got all of their work correct!! We are brilliant :)
Material Hunt!!
The children were hunting around the classroom this week for different materials. We found lots of great things and the children worked in groups to draw objects made from the different materials!!

Our great work this week
We had a very busy week in school this week, what with the upcoming Dublin match and all of the events planned for the school. We managed to get our work done, one of the students even became mini múinteoir during our Maths lesson :)
We made fabulous artwork using our handprints and a secret tool to make prints. See if you can guess what our SECRET tool was, our artwork is displayed on our front door!!
We also made our Autumn trees by tracing the outline of our hands and using cotton buds to create the leaves!! They turned out great!!
And of course who can forget our Dublin Jersey that we made from cutting up the Argos catalogue and gluing down all of the blue pieces that we found!!!
We are GREAT artists here in Room 5!!!

Our mini múinteoirs were hard at work this week revising the names of the letters of the alphabet. We used this mini chalkboard to create a classroom to practice writing the letters. It is important that we know the sounds that the letters make as well as the names of the letters.

Construction workers
Every morning we like to practice using different materials to make different shapes and buildings. This week we made the tallest tower and the longest bridge!! Working with Lego and other construction materials is great for motor development.

We had great fun wearing blue into school on Friday! We learned the song "Sam is Coming Home" because we hope that Dublin will win the match on Sunday. There was great excitement in the school as we took a whole school photograph! We really enjoyed our day and fingers crossed that Sam is coming home on Sunday!! Clonburris abú :)
Noah's Ark
We learned all about Noah's Ark this week. The children made up their own dramas in groups, role-playing different animals that were on the Ark in the story. They did a great job and the audience had a great time guessing the different animals.
The children also learned the song "The Animals went in Two by Two" to go with the story. We had great fun counting all of the animals at the end.

We are family!!!
We are learning all about different families this week. We all drew lovely pictures of the people we live with. We realise that not all families look the same but that we all love each other the same.
