Over the next few weeks your child will be accessing various websites as part of their homework. It is very important that your child is supervised while using the internet. First and foremost, make sure the device that your child will be working on has the parental controls/safe search turned on.
Youtube is a great resource and has so many educational videos. However, advertisements are shown between videos and the suggested videos that appear on the right-hand side of the screen may not always be age appropriate. It is so important that your child learns how to use the website properly. There is a Youtube for Kids! https://www.youtubekids.com/ Here are two links with information for parents about Youtube. cybersafeireland.org/blog/posts/2018/september/youtube-what-parents-need-to-know/ www.commonsensemedia.org/youtube For more information on Internet Safety in general check out these websites. I have all of my fourth class' belongings packed up and ready for collection. There is a letter to the parents on the home page of the website. If you wish to collect your child's things you must make an appointment with the school. The collection days are Wednesdays and Fridays between 11am and 1pm. I have them packed into bags for you to make it easier when collecting!
I have gathered up the book-holders and I will keep these safe in school for your child for next year. They will need them in 5th class. Their names are on them so there will be no confusion in September. If you have any rental books or school library books, can you please return these to the school before the end of June. I have sent home each child's copy of Artemis Fowl which we were reading as part of our book project in fourth class. It is theirs to keep! It would be nice if they continued reading it. Our "Going for Gold" trip was going to be a cinema trip to see the Artemis Fowl movie which comes out on June 12th. It is going to be shown on Disney plus instead. I have also sent home your child's artwork from their portfolio and project work that we had up on the walls. They might like to show you all that we got up to this year! |

Plants in your garden
- Daisy: The English name “Daisy” comes from “Day’s Eye”. This reflects the appearance of the daisy with its yellow centre — the eye, and the ring of white petals — the eyelash. The daisy flower closes at night and opens when daylight comes as if it were waking and sleeping — like real people do. Check the Daisys in your garden during the day. Are they open? Check again that evening to see if they start to close!
Make a daisy chain.
How to draw a daisy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMYhplLC9oo
- Dandelion: The English name dandelion comes from the French ”dent de lion” and refers to the toothed leaves which must have put someone in mind of lions’ teeth. The Irish name is ”Caisearbhán”, from “gas searbh” meaning the bitter stem. The white stem juice is alkaline and was used in ancient times as a cure for warts. The leaves grow in a rosette from which come the bright yellow flowers on a single stalk. These quickly turn into white seed heads known as clocks and the seeds, each with its parachute of white hairs, are easily blown away in the wind to settle and grow again quickly.
Blow the seeds of a dandelion. How many puffs does it take you? Can you blow them all away in one go?
- Buttercup: They are called buttercups in English because it was thought that a pasture full of buttercups eaten by cattle would give a golden colour to the milk and even more so to the butter made from the milk. This is not actually true — buttercups are generally avoided by cattle. They have an acrid taste and one of the Irish names for buttercups, “fearbán”, reflects this.

- The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a story about a young German boy who befriends a Jewish boy who is in a concentration camp. “Nine year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution or the Holocaust. All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas. Bruno’s friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation. And in exploring what he is unwittingly a part of, he will inevitably become subsumed by the terrible process.” You can listen to the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdjvCcq-4gg&list=PLKwtZgvBM54WsDpIxmU2k498q87BK1HxQ (It was also made into a film) - Code Cracking for Beginners is an exciting ebook! “It’s 1941. Well done to everyone on you hard work! It is hard to stay motivated being away from school so long! I hear you are all enjoying the sunshine! Some you are even helping out around the house! I am delighted to hear it!
I hope you enjoyed learning about mini-beasts last week! This week we will be learning about birds and taking a look at the birds that live around us! There are almost 500 species of bird in Ireland! Birds are very interesting and this time of year is a busy time for them. Most birds nest in the Spring, such as Crows, Ravens, and Finches. By now, they have already built their nests, laid eggs and now have chicks to look after. Other birds migrate, and return to Ireland to breed. You may have noticed lots of Swallows swooping around your house in the last week or two. They are looking for places to build their nests! Other birds that have returned to breed are the House-martin, the Cuckoo and the Swift! Keep an eye out for these too! Enjoy the bird watching!

Bird Watching Rules
- Remember we are guardians of the Earth’s creatures and we must be careful not to harm or cause them too much distress when we study them.
- Birds are hard to spot, but easy to hear. Close your eyes and listen. Can you point to where the song is coming from?
- You must be patient. If you wait for a little while you will soon start to spot some birds. It can help if you have a bird feeder to encourage birds into your garden. If you have a cat make sure it can’t pounce on the birds! Put the bird feeder in a good place and put a bell on your cat’s collar!
- You must be quiet. If you are outdoors in a park or on a walk, you do not want to scare the birds away. If you remain still and quiet birds will come closer to you. If you are looking into your garden it is easy to watch from your window! Try not to move around too much!
- Look but don’t touch! If you find nests, leave them be! It is okay to have a little peek but do not disturb the nest.
- You may find feathers or egg shells. If they are on the ground it should be okay to collect these.

Well done everyone on another week of fantastic learning! I enjoy seeing what you get up to! I am very impressed with all your hard work and creativity that I have seen! I’m glad you enjoyed learning about WW1.
Thank you to everyone who has emailed me over the last three weeks. I have enjoyed seeing what you get up to but I'm also glad to know you are OK! I would ask that any parent who has not checked in with me yet to please send me an email. I would like to know how you and your family are doing.
Remember that I am putting up a range of activities for you to choose from to suit different learners and interests. There is no pressure to complete everything I put up. If you are helping with cooking, baking, tidying around the house or doing other projects, that is just as worthwhile. Practicing life-skills is very important and a good use of this time. I would love to see what else you get up to during the week!

Minibeast care and safety factors
- Remember we are guardians of the Earth’s creatures and we must be careful not to harm or cause them too much distress when we study them.
- Avoid using glass containers.
- Do not make undue noise in the area being investigated.
- Don’t leave minibeasts in direct sunlight.
- Leave some moist cotton wool or tissue with them if they are going to be kept in captivity for a few hours.

Life on the Farm!
For those of you who have been kindly asking how I am doing and wanted to hear more about the farm, I have included some photos of what the animals and I got up to this week!
The farm is especially busy this time of year with lots of baby calves being born. We have three new calves. I would like you to think of good names for the calves! You can email me your ideas!
I went up to the farm to help my dad "tag" the calves. This is when we put tags in their ears. It is like a cow birth certificate! It is like getting your ears pierced! Each tag has a number on it which helps us keep a record of them!
We then went out to check on the cows and calves that were in the field. The cows are all very happy to be out relaxing in the sunshine. Can you spot which one is the bull? (He is the one with the extra piece of jewellery on!) The calves drink milk from the cow's udders until they are old enough to eat grass. I took a video to show you! Next time you put milk in your cereal you can think of where it came from!
Our neighbour's two donkeys (Jack and Jill) broke out of their field and were taking a trip up the road! They are little rascals and always trying to go on adventures! My sisters and I had to run out of the house and make sure they were put safely back in the field! We gave them an apple each as a treat once they were safe! Every day is a busy day on the farm!

When adding or subtracting time children often forget they are only counting to 60 minutes not 100. This common mistake is explained in a red bubble at the top of page 144.
Revise what your child already knows about time. They should be able to read both analog and digital clocks. It is a good idea to encourage your child to wear a watch and ask them to tell you the time often throughout the day. Ask them to count forwards and backwards in time. eg. "What time will it be in 20 mins?" "What time was it an hour and ten minutes ago?"

Fact File Checklist
- Name: What we know them as and their scientific name
- Classification: is it a mammal/reptile/insect/etc
- Description: what they look like, exciting features, etc
- Habitat: where they live
- Diet: Are they a herbivore/carnivore/omnivore food or prey they eat, unusual eating habits if any
- Interesting/favourite facts: what is a group called? How much do they weigh?
- Picture of animal: you can draw this!
Example
- Name: Lion (Panthera Leo) The Lion belongs to the “Panthera group” which includes big cats such as tigers, leopards and jaguars. They all have the ability to roar. “Leo” is the Latin word for Lion. There are two species of Lion, the African lion (lives in Africa) and the Asiatic lion (lives in Asia).
- Classification: Lions are mammals. This means their babies are born alive and the mother feeds its young milk. Baby lions are called cubs. A lioness will have 2-3 cubs at a time.
- Description: Lions have strong, compact bodies and powerful forelegs, teeth and jaws for pulling down and killing prey. Their coats are yellow-gold, and adult males have shaggy manes that range in colour from blonde to reddish-brown to black. A group of Lions is called a Pride. They are most active at night.
- Habitat: Lions live in a variety of habitats but prefer grassland, savanna, dense scrub, and open woodland. They used to be found across much of Europe, Asia, and Africa, but now they are found mainly in parts of Africa south of the Sahara
- Diet: Lions are carnivores. This means they eat meat. Their prey includes antelopes, buffaloes, zebras, young elephants, rhinos, hippos, wild hogs, crocodiles and giraffes. But they also sometimes eat smaller prey like mice, birds, hares, lizards, and tortoises. They are not above stealing kills from other carnivores, like hyenas, wild dogs, cheetahs, and leopards, or scavenging spoiled meat.
- Interesting Facts: Lions sleep for 16-20 hours each day! A lion’s roar is very loud. It can be heard up to 8 kilometres away! The lion is the second largest cat in the world. Male lions spend their time guarding their territory and minding the cubs. Female lions (lionesses) hunt down prey for the pride. They work as a team to bring down big prey. After a successful hunt, all the lions in the pride share the meal. But there is a pecking order, with the adult males taking first claim, followed by the lionesses, and finally, the cubs.

We will be encouraging the pupils to practice their maths skills through the use of online maths games each week. Online games use Flash to operate. Flash is blocked on most devices. Google how to unblock flash on your computer if this happens. The method of unblocking will vary depending on your device eg. Windows 10 or search engine eg. Google Chrome
The computer I use is a Windows 10, and the search engine I use is google chrome.
Here is how I unblocked Flash
You can right click the lock icon on the left-hand side of the search bar. Go to site settings. Scroll down through permissions until you find Flash. Change the settings from block to allow. Then go back to the tab with the game. The game should be working. If not refresh your page. The refresh button is the rotating arrow icon to the left of the search bar at the top of the webpage.
Encourage your child to explore other maths games with parental permission and supervision. It is a great way to get them to enjoy and be enthusiastic about maths!

Happy Easter!
Dear parents,
I hope you are all safe and well. This is a very strange and testing time for us all. I will be adding daily activities to this class page after Easter. You can contact me through my email [email protected] if you have any questions or queries. I will continue to add links to sites I think are beneficial. Do not feel under pressure to complete everything I put up as I am putting up a variety of suggestions with different interests in mind.
I would love to see pictures of projects and activities that the children are doing. It might even encourage them to get involved if they know they can show me at the end! Feel free to send pictures to my email. If they want to practice letter writing, they could write to me or someone else in their family.
Here are a few sites I have found that may interest your child.

Dear Parents,
Although we must take time away from school for the next few weeks do not worry about not having school books or falling behind.
The most important practice your child could do during this time is to learn their tables off by heart and read lots of books!
This is also a great opportunity for learning life skills at home which are just as important as academics!
I would highly recommend playing board games, card games, jigsaws and doing "make and do" projects together. This is a lovely opportunity to spend quality time that they will remember forever!
I will put up some suggestions below for things fourth can do!
I would highly recommend the Twinkl website for activities. There are details of how to access the free subscription on the school homepage.
Hopefully we will be back to school before long!
