Clonburris Spring Clean 2018
We will be applying for our next Green Flag in 2018. The theme is Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste. We will discover how work on Green-Schools has positively influenced our global community. We are working hard this year and are aiming to reduce waste in our school. We are also helping to reduce waste in the local environment as well as linking with other countries. We are looking at sustainable development and our work as a Fairtrade School and community is continuing.
The Bin Gardaí have been visiting classrooms and checking that the paper bin and regular bin are being used correctly.

Visit from Tidy Towns Representatives
Agnes O'Neill and Rachel Heller from Tidy Towns came to speak to second class, our Green School Committee and School Council on Friday 28th October. They talked about the importance of looking after our local environment and keeping the estates of Clondalkin tidy. They encouraged everyone to clean up, plant flowers which will attract bees and to keep the river Camac free from litter, especially plastic. We'll be talking to classes after Hallowe'en about reducing waste in Clonburris and the local environment. Young volunteers would be very welcome on Saturday mornings! Meet at 10 a.m. (Tuthills Car park in the village). |

We celebrated earning our 7th Green Flag! Well done to everyone who worked so hard on the theme of biodiversity. Special thanks goes to our Green School Committee, Ms. Brett, Mr. Shannon, Ms. Walsh, Ms. Murray and Mrs. Cleary. The ceremony started with the Green School Committee presenting the flag to the school, as 5th class played 'Congratulations'. Casey Greene and Dylan Doyle read poems, the Green School Committee spoke about the steps involved in earning our 7th flag and 4th classes sang an original song. Ms. Murray and Mr. McNamara were present and Mrs. Cleary sent her congratulations via Mrs. Ryan. Thanks to local photographer, Tommy Keogh, for the group shots he took during the day. After the break classes took part in lots of activities outside and held talent shows in the hall. A well-deserved celebration for all! Lots more photos here.

GREEN SCHOOLS : 2013 - 2015 BIODIVERSITY
On 2nd February Barbara Reilly from South Dublin County Council came out to inspect our school for the Biodiversity Green Flag. She was really amazed at our Woodland Fairy Trail and all the work we have been doing. She was very pleased with our efforts to increase the Biodiversity in our area and told us to keep up the good work. She will send in her report to An Taisce. Mrs Cleary has sent in our application which details everything we have been doing for the past two years. We will keep our fingers crossed that we get good news but it is really important that we keep up this important work. We will hold a Biodiversity Anti-litter day in April and of course continue with our WOW days and Park n Strides. The gardening club will be planting potatoes soon and they have already planted lots of seeds.
Fantastic work continues to be done in our school garden - well done to the gardening club and to the green school committee. All during January we have really focussed on our theme of Biodiversity. Thanks to Mr. Shannon who visited all the classes and gave the children a talk on the importance of Biodiversity and the threats to it. Mrs Cleary was thrilled with the response from all the classes to their various activities. They have all done amazing work. Junior and Senior infants worked on collages of Happy/ Sad planets and made large bugs and insects. First class have learned all about the threats to biodiversity and their large scale wall collage of butterflies and bees is stunning. Second class made some beautiful signs for our garden and Ms Donlan's class made up a poem. Third class did wonderful posters depicting the life cycle of the frog. Fourth class, helped by Ms Hilliard, made up an original song and they also made an amazing Scarecrow for the garden - check it out! Fifth class really did fantastic work with their 3d gardens and their projects on Biodiversity are so interesting. Finally, what a clever lot sixth class are - take a look at their terrific habitat maps. Congratulations to Sadhb Breen who is the Clonburris Brainiac of the year and well done to the other nineteen runners up.

Our Biodiversity Slogan competition has been running for the past month. The Green School Committee whittled down the entries to four possible slogans and a vote was held. The winning slogan was written by one of our pupils in 6th class. Her slogan is:
Truth be told, Biodiversity is worth more than Gold ! Our winner is pictured here with Mrs Ryan, receiving her prize of a fairy door which was donated by the Irish Fairy Door Company. Well done to her and to all the other entrants. |
Our fairies have officially moved in hip hip hurray!! Their washing is out on the line and their little fairy paths can be seen. Gavin from the Irish Fairy Door Company officially handed over the Fairy Garden Book to Mrs Ryan on Friday 21st November. There was great excitement in the air. Lots of children wrote miniature thank you notes to Queen Kate and to Gavin and his team. Glanmore Foods made an AMAZING cake featuring the Worry Tree. This was presented to Gavin to bring back to enjoy with all the team. The Green School Committee presented Gavin with a giant card signed by nearly all the children in the school. The gardening club were on hand and their children and grandchildren joined in the fun. The Chairperson of the Board of Management - Mr. Seán Mac Namara was there to congratulate everyone on the opening of THE WOODLAND FAIRY TRAIL. Seán was the Green School Co-ordinator for years and steered the school to receiving six green flags! A child in Junior Infants heard the fairies giggling just yesterday so they must be very happy here.

THE FAIRIES DOORS HAVE ARRIVED!!! Gavin from the Irish Fairy Door Company brought eight fairy doors to Clonburris on Friday 14th November. They came with beautiful name plaques. Queen Kate has chosen the following fairies for our woodland garden: We can't wait for them to move in.....it might be tonight!!
Willow - A wise old fairy, who is the guardian of our garden fairies. Nettle - A grumpy fairy - he gets annoyed with an untidy garden. Jewel - This fairy loves shiny, pretty things. Lona - This fairy takes away your worries. Tiffany - This fairy loves music and song. Twinkles - When the sun sets this fairy's door sparkles. Lady - This fairy minds all the insects and small creatures in the garden. Johnny - This fairy keeps the garden tidy and clean. |
The picture above shows Aoife and Angelina placing the basket of fairy keys under Jewel's fairy door (she loves shiny things!!). Angelina is holding the beautiful book that Gavin from the Irish Fairy Door Company presented us with. It holds all the reasons why we wanted to bring the fairies to Clonburris. Of course the most important was because we wanted to increase the BIODIVERSITY in our garden and we want the garden to be a place where learning can occur and where imagination can be fostered.

WOW it certainly was a WOW day today 15th October 2014 - Congratulations to all those boys, girls, Mams, Dads, grandparents, teachers who walked to school today. It was our biggest turn out ever!!! Mr. Toomey's first class won the "Silver Boot" award and Ms Dwyer's Senior Infants won the "Bronze Boot" award. Look out for the bar chart in the school hall to see where your class came in the results league.

We are now in year two of our campaign to achieve our Biodiversity Flag 2013 -2015. We will continue with rejuvenating the school garden and encouraging all teachers to use this wonderful resource.
Our hard-working Gardening club are doing wonderful work and we can't wait for the student reps from the Green Schools committee to join us. For the first time ever, third class will form part of our committee.
The 2014/2015 committee met today and Mrs Ryan congratulated them and presented them with their badges. Six of last year's committee remain because this is a two year programme - Aoife, Hollie, Chloe, Ben, Raphael and Erin. We welcome Ben, Sadhb, Katie and Angelina our four new members.
Web cams have now been installed in our bird houses - we are looking forward to spring time already! We are working hard on rejuvenating our garden. Mrs Cleary & the Green School Committee were very lucky that a wonderful grandparent - Paddy Sullivan, helped them plant cabbages, broccoli, carrots, onions and lettuce. We have purchased some small garden tools and some Senior Infants had great fun digging and raking and planting onions with Paddy.
Fantastic news that Aoife Kelly used her initiative and wrote to the Irish Fairy Door company asking them to donate some fairy doors - after all, we are trying to increase the bio diversity in our garden!! What do you think happened - they loved her "adorable" letter and they will be donating the doors after Easter. Hurray!! Check out more photos below.

Our new Gardening Course began on Friday 9th April. Look at our wonderful parents and grandparents enjoying themselves in the fresh air. Already they have planted turnip seeds and learned how to clear an area for sowing.
Working hard in the garden !!
Walk on Wednesday, 12th March, 2014
Another successful WOW day for Clonburris! A terrific number of pupils, parents, grandparents, teachers and SNAs met at Lidl at 8.30 a.m. and walked to school together in the sunshine. Local gardaí helped with road safety and Lidl provided goodie bags for a lot of children. Lots of children wore their own high visibility jackets and jackets were provided for others.
Thanks to all who support our school's effort in maintaining our Green School status.
Congratulations to Ms Donlon's class who won the "Golden Boot" award - a total of 88% of their class walked to school. Ms Hilliard's class won the "Silver Boot" award with a total of 79% of children walking to school on that day - absolutely fantastic!

We've come a long way since September 2013 and the garden is starting to come back to what it once was and it's only April 2014! We are delighted that some classes have started using the Amuigh Faoin Spéir learning Zone. Third class have put up bird feeders and already we can hear so many more birds singing happily. The vegetables are thriving. There's lots more work to be done but hopefully we will have another gardening club after Easter like the one we had in September, thanks to the ETB. When the fairies take up residence we will really be thrilled!
Green School Committee 2013/2014
Here are some more members of our Green Schools' Committee posing for a photo with Mrs Ryan.
OUR NEXT `WALK ON WEDNESDAY' IS WEDNESDAY 12TH MARCH 2014. MEET AT THE CAR PARK IN LIDL AT 8.30 AM AND WE WILL WALK TO SCHOOL TOGETHER. COME ON..... WE NEED YOU!!
Our New Green Schools' Committee met for the first time on Tuesday 15th October 2013. Some members were missing due to school matches. It's difficult to get everyone together at the same time. Mrs Cleary is the new Green Schools' Co-ordinator. Ms Murray and John our Caretaker will also be on the committee. Our school is now striving for our BIODIVERSITY green flag. This will take two years to achieve. Mrs Cleary presented the children with their Green School badges and then they went out into the garden to draw some plans and do an audit of the biodiversity found there. The garden needs a lot of work done to it and it will be a big project. Mrs Ryan our principal congratulated the children on being chosen for the Green School Committee.
The Green Schools' Committee have been out several times litter-picking with Mrs Cleary. They are also very diligent about keeping our window boxes watered. Here they all are with Mrs Ryan our principal.
The Green school committee visited classes this week and delivered information about how to make home made bird feeders. January is a tough month for the birds and so the committee is encouraging everyone to play their part and feed the birds.
Our 'Raising of the Flag' ceremony was held on Monday 24th June, 2013. This is the 5th Green Flag for Clonburris! Representatives from each class level carried in the flag, tin whistle players from 2nd class played and the Music Club also performed. The Green School committee can be seen in the photo below. The flag was then brought outside and raised. A fun day of activities then followed. Congratulations to all the boys and girls who helped Clonburris achieve this flag and special thanks goes to Mr. Seán McNamara for all his hard work and commitment!

In April 2013 Clonburris received its fifth green flag award from An Taisce for our work on
the theme of climate change (with the focus on energy). The Green Flag is a prestigious award presented to schools who work on Green Themes such as Litter and Waste, Energy, Water, Transport etc., and whose pupils, staff and parents are environmentally aware.
Clonburris NS began working in this area back in 1990, long before there was a Green Flag
Award, and we have developed every year since. Mr. Seán McNamara has been the Green
School Co-Ordinator from the start and has inspired us all with his energy and commitment!
We were the first Clondalkin school to receive a Green School Flag on the 25/03/04 for our
work on Litter and Waste. We received the next three flags for Energy, Water Awareness
and Conservation and Transport.
The whole School population takes an active part in the scheme. The children are encouraged
to recycle the following:
- Cans
- Batteries
- Stamps
- Mobile Phones
- Ink Cartridges
- Paper
- Compost.
The first Green School Committee was formed in 2003 and the Parents' Gardening Club was
set up in 2011. Our first "Park and Stride" took place in 2010 and Mr. Leech's class also won
An Taisce Transport Competition with their song "Walk to School" in that year.
