Ms Walsh's 2nd Class
2021/22
Spring Activities
With the days getting longer and warmer, we took to the school garden to investigate what minibeasts and flowers we could find!
St. Patrick's Day!
The children had great fun getting ready for St. Patrick's Day. They took part in the fun dance shake up, they made shamrock wands and they also had gymnastics!
Looking Forward to 2022!
Christmas Fun!
We loved December in school as we got to open a door on our advent calendar every morning, we took part in the 12 days of Fitmas, we painted Christmas Trees and decorated our own baubles, we learned a dance to 'Rockin' around the Christmas Tree', we got to attend the Christmas Fair, we painted Rudolph pictures and we even made reindeer headbands on the day of the Christmas Holidays! Here are a few pictures of some of the above activities. Nollaig Shona ó Rang a Dó!
How to Make a Strawberry Smoothie!
After discussing the importance of healthy eating, we decided to make our own healthy smoothie. Watch the slideshow below to see how we washed the fruit, chopped the fruit, added the ingredients and then used a blender to make our smoothie. We also had some fantastic waiters and waitresses to help serve our delicious smoothies. Finally, after tasting the smoothie, we practised our procedural writing and we wrote the recipe for the strawberry smoothie.
Happy Halloween!
Take a look at our scary costumes! I hope we didn't scare too many people on our Halloween walk!
Space Week
We have been busy celebrating Space Week. We wrote about Space in English and we created our own solar system pictures in Art. One pupil in our class brought in a Space project from which we gathered more information about Space!
European Sports Day Sept 2021
The pupils had a fantastic and active day playing dodgeball, soccer, basketball etc. Check out some of the photographs below!
Starting Our Journey in Second Class
A warm welcome back to all the boys and girls in second class. They have all settled back extremely well and we are all very excited to see what this year has in store!
1st Class 2020/21
Summer Fun in First Class!
We've had so much fun over the past few weeks as we took part in Sports Day, Active Schools Week and Going for Gold. Check out the photographs below to see some of the activities and yummy ice-creams!
Easter Bonnets and Classroom Egg Hunt!
Check out the photographs below to see all the amazing Easter Bonnets! The children also had great fun trying to find the secret eggs hidden around our classroom!
World Book Day!
We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day. The children dressed up as their favourite characters, they completed a book review and they even took part in a fun quiz! To top it all off, we also had a special zoom with Seósamh, a storyteller, who read 3 books to all the first class boys and girls.
Water
For Engineer's Week, we were looking at the topic of water. We discussed all the different ways that we use water and each pupil designed a water drop for our display. We also wanted to investigate how plants drink water. To do this, we poured some food colouring into the water with our white flowers, and when we came into school the next day, our white flowers had changed colour!
Fun with Magnets!
Last week we learned about magnets in Science. We had great fun predicting what classroom materials were magnetic and then we tested the items to see if our predictions were correct. We also completed fun mazes using magnets.
Halloween Art
All the boys and girls have settled back really well into school life once again! I am also delighted to be teaching such a happy and friendly class. Since returning, we have been very busy with our school work and we have been learning lots of fun poems, rhymes and songs. We really enjoy doing art and as you can see below, first class are already getting ‘pumped’ for Halloween!! Keep an eye on this page to see all the fun and exciting things we will be doing this year!

Hi girls and boys, a big well done for working so hard at home doing your school work. I am very proud of you all! I was always so happy to see your photos and videos and to hear your news. Ms Walsh is lovely and you will love having her as your new teacher. She is looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you. I told her she is very lucky to have such amazing children in her class. I really enjoyed teaching you in Junior and Senior Infants and will miss you all next year. You have worked very hard during that time and are now ready for first class.
I hope you have a great summer and enjoy lots of fun with your family and I look forward to visiting you in your new classroom at the end of August.
Ms Creed
Dear parents, it has certainly been a very strange time for us all but hopefully by September we will have more normality back in our lives.
Well done with the homeschooling and supporting your child's learning during the past few months. I'm sure it wasn't easy and that you are glad you can now relax and enjoy a well deserved break. Thank you so much for keeping in contact as I loved to hear from you and to know how your child was getting on.
It has been a pleasure teaching your child in Junior and Senior Infants and it's such a pity that it all ended so suddenly in March.
Have a great summer and stay safe.

Dear parents, I hope you are all keeping safe and well and that you had a good week. My email is [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you and to know how your child is getting on. Please feel free to send photos of your child's work (e.g. drawings, school work, LEGO creations etc.) or just a little note to say hello. Thank you to all the parents who have already emailed. It was so good to hear from you! Each week I will give some additional work. These are only suggestions as I know that some of you are working from home or minding other children, so please don't feel under any pressure. Don't worry as your child has worked very hard all year and will catch up when back to school. In the meantime, have a good week, mind yourselves and stay safe.

Here is a nice little video to help your child to remember when and where to use a capital letter in a sentence:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwUjGtdTxVo
Free-writing: Encourage your child to do some free-writing e.g. something she/he did during the week by sounding out the letters in the words themselves. Remember to always use neat handwriting, spaces, capital letters and full stops.
Your child may like to do pages 34 and 35 (On the Farm) in A Way with Words.
* Continue Mrs Murphy's Copy
* Begin Mrs Murphy's Writing Copy
I would suggest that your child does only one page at a time from each book (2/3 pages of each book per week). Encourage your child to take their time with their work as the objectives of these writing copies are to help your child develop good letter formation, neat writing and to write between the lines as indicated. You can refer to the language to use as below.

5th - 8th May
Jolly Phonics diagraph/sound of the week
Our diagraph for this week is y. These videos below are not exclusively for the y sound but it does show that letters can have several sounds (ee, ea, ey, y, e and ie). It will seem confusing to your child but don't worry as they will have plenty of practice with these sounds again next year. Watch the videos and then write some of the words you have heard. The little rhyme on page 80 may help your child to know that ee sounds the same as y:
y is ee’s best friend. She says ee too.

Reading
Continue to read The Beach House at your own pace.
https://my.cjfallon.ie/preview/student/2704/1
Before reading each page, chat about what things are in the picture and what might be happening / what might happen next / what is being said. Encourage your child to find any ee words in the book e.g meet, cheese, Feena etc. Do the same with ea, and y.
Choose one of the following games to play.
Game: You or your child can choose a sentence. Then write the sentence out on a page, cut up the words and mix them up. Ask your child to put the words in the correct order.
I Spy Game: Using the pictures, play ‘I spy’ with my little eye something beginning with the letter name or sound ‘s’ etc. or ‘I spy’ with my little eye a word with the ‘ig’ sound etc.
The Rhyming Game: Choose a word e.g. run on page 6. Have your child think of other words that rhyme with it.
True or false Game: Choose a sentence. One part is to be true and the other part false e.g. on page 8 - Orin has six crackers in one hand and half a cracker in the other. Your child can identify which part is true and which is false.
Story of the Week
Our story for this week is Cinderella. You may already have the book at home. If not, there are a few versions on line to choose from. Read the story and then ask your child to retell it. Chat all about the story. What is your favourite part and why? Make up names for Cinderella's stepmother and two unkind sisters. Come up with other animals that the Fairy Godmother could have used to change into the horses. Make up your own ending for the story.
The calendar and writing names on written work
Encourage your child to continue with writing the date and his/her full name on any worksheets in preparation for next year.
Your child might like to use this interactive calendar each day.

Hand writing
Capital letter of the week is T
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yl9p--gElU (note our 't' is down, flick, lift your pencil and across)
Encourage your child to do some free-writing by sounding out the words themselves. It can be about something they did during the week or a programme watched on TV or write about Cinderella's dress etc. Remind your child to always use neat handwriting, spaces, capital letters and full stops. You may also want to continue with Away with words.
Maths
This week we are revising 3D shapes. We have already learnt about cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres earlier this year. We haven't however learnt about a pyramid, prism or cone but your child can learn about them in this song/video and link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnZYK83utu0
https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/PlanetMaths/PMSI/resources/toolkit/3d/index.html
Go on a 3D Shape Hunt
Have your child go on a shape hunt at home. Find one or more of each shape; cubes (e.g. dice), cuboids (e.g. cereal box) cylinders (e.g. tinned food) and spheres (e.g. an apple). Ask your child to name the 3D shapes they have found. Chat about each one of them:- how many corners and faces/sides are there? Has it straight edges? If so, how many edges? (For example a cube has six faces, eight corners and twelve edges). Can you see 2D shapes within each 3D shapes (circles, squares, rectangles). Which can roll/which cannot roll? Which can be stacked on top of each other?
A 3D shape game:
Pop a few of the objects in a bag. Have your child, with eyes closed, choose one object. He/she should try and name the 3D shape by feeling the number of sides/faces, corners and edges.

The calendar and writing names on written work
Each day in school, as part of our morning routine, we talked about what day, date, month and year it was. Your child was in the habit of dating all work e.g. 27/4/20 and writing his/her first and surname on all worksheets. It would be a good idea that your child continues to practise writing both their full name and the date on all worksheets in preparation for next year.

Project work
I won’t give any project work this week as it’s Active Home Week but we can resume with one again next week. So in the meantime get active and have fun!
20th - 27th April
Jolly Phonics revision of diagraphs/sounds
This week, we will be revising the following diagraphs: ou, oo and oo, oa, oi, ee, ie, aw, or, ue, ar and ai. Watch the Mr. Thorne does Phonics videos on YouTube to help with the revision.
Write words mentioned on the videos and think of other words with these diagraphs. Write as many as you can. The youtube alphablocks diagraph videos will be useful also. Just type in the diagraph you want.
https://educateplus.ie/ppresource/just-phonics-senior-infants
Complete pages 76 and 77. If you don’t have a printer, it’s no problem as your child can do it orally or write it on a page or copybook.
Reading
Begin reading ‘The Beach House’, Wonderland Reader. You will find the book on the following link:
https://my.cjfallon.ie/preview/student/2704/1
I would suggest that on the first day the parent reads the whole book and your child reads the first page. From then on your child can read two pages each day as we did with the other books for homework. Before reading each page, chat about the objects in the picture and what might be happening and what might happen next.
Game: You or your child can choose a sentence. Then you write the sentence out on a page, cut up the words and mix them up. Ask your child to put the words in the correct order. You can repeat for other sentences if you wish.
Also, continue learning or revising the Tricky Words.
Our story for this week is Hansel and Gretel
Either read the storybook or find it on YouTube. Chat together about the story. Which was your favourite/least favourite part? How about changing the story, for example have different characters or a different ending!
Hand writing
Encourage your child to practice writing his/her name, both first and surname.
Capital letter of the week R
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5z941Xx2fM
Have your child write a sentence or two about the favourite part in the story Hansel and Gretel remembering good letter formation, spaces, capital letters and full stops. Alternatively write about something you did or your favourite joke or a shopping list. Any topic of choice or interest!
Choose 2/3 tricky words and encourage your child to put the word in a sentence.
Maths
Our theme for this week is Capacity. This topic is always a fun one to learn as it involves lots of water play! So just get a basin or container of water and fill it with lots of different containers – egg cups, cups, empty milk cartons, containers of all sizes etc. Add a drop of food colouring if you like! Some vocabulary to use whilst chatting and splashing about:- full, empty, half empty, half full, nearly empty, nearly full, holds more, holds less, as much as/same amount, fill up to the top, pour, enough and level. Chat about which container holds more/less etc. Ask your child to put the containers of water in order of capacity. Have your child estimate amounts e.g. how many egg cups of water do you think will fill the cup etc. Check the fridge – which milk/juice cartons hold more/less etc.
Play the following interactive game:
https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/PlanetMaths/PMSI/resources/activitya/pm_si_122/index.html
Try these worksheets:

Why not give this quiz a try!
https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/capacity-quiz-t-m-3633
Continue with counting forwards/backwards and sums, both orally and written.
Revise the story of 5 and practise writing your numbers 1-10. Look out for the number 5 around your house, on food packages etc. Watch the clock for 5 o'clock. Be a number 5 Detective!!
Gailge - Scéal Hansel and Gretel
Your child will enjoy the story at
https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/AbairLiom/SI/resources/Stories/AL_SI_ACT_Sceal_L24_HanselAgusGretel/build/index.html
Ask your child to listen for words they recognize and tell you the words after each page of the story.
https://www.folensonline.ie/home/library/programmes/abair-liom-senior-infants/resources/
Click on Lesson, then Hansel agus Gretel and scroll to Luaschártaí. Show your child the pictures. Your child can repeat the words after you. They know some of these words already.
Then scroll down the page to Ceacht 24: Hansel and Gretel. If you have a printer, print the page and your child can colour, cut and put the pictures in the correct order. If not, your child can draw and colour in their favourite part on a blank page.
A project challenge!
Your child might like a little challenge each week, however there is no pressure at all to do it! The topic for this week is Professions. Help your child to name as many professions as possible. Then encourage your child to choose one, a vet, a bus driver, a doctor, a hairdresser, an astronaut etc. Then together think what work this person does, what uniform they wear, what equipment they use, where they work etc. You can go about it in your own way. Maybe go on line to find out more. Print and cut out pictures if no access to a printer. Encourage your child to write about what he/she already knows or has now learnt and draw pictures. It can be done on paper, a sheet of card, a copybook or using whatever you already have at home. Have fun with it!
Some fun with Science!
If your child would like to try some Scientific experiments, here is a great website with lots of science fun. I especially like the Dry Erase one! Do one a week perhaps! I’d love to hear back how you get on.
http://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/
Good websites you may like to dip in and out of!
All subjects are available on Twinkl.
The Maths and English worksheets are particularly good and can be completed orally if you have no access to a printer. |
