The first two weeks of school

The new Junior Infants will start school at 10am on Wednesday 30th of August.

The first 2 weeks of school:
  • For the 1st week Junior Infants will be in school from 10am until 12pm.
  • For the 2nd week they will be in school from 8:45am until 12pm.
  • For the first 2 weeks you will be dropping off and collecting your child at the church entrance / staff car park side of the school.
  • This allows them to gradually settle in.  Please be on time for dropping and collecting at home time.   Reminders will be sent out on the Aladdin Connect mobile app.

After the first 2 weeks:
  • After the first 2 weeks, the normal infant school day starts at 8:45am and finishes at 1:30pm.
  • Your child will be dropped off to school in the mornings on the Junior/Senior infants door (located at the church entrance/ staff carpark).
  • You will be collecting your child from the main school yard at 1:30pm every day.
  • It is very important that your child is dropped and collected on time every day.

If your child is upset:
  • Even though we do our very best to prepare the children for starting their new school, some children will become upset in the first few days.
  • If your child is upset, don't panic.  There is always school staff on hand to help your child.
  • When you have reassured your child leave as quickly as possible.
  • If you wish, you can call the school or the HSCL teacher Ms Kerins, and most of the time you will find they have settled well into their school day!

Reading with your child - Top Tips

Reading with your child can look like: Reading aloud, taking turns, acting, play and discussing.
Here is a short video clip of a parent and child reading.  You will also find examples of what questions and the 'chat' you can have throughout the story.

If you are not able to view it below, click here.

2. Before We Read

Picture
  • Let your child choose the book
  • Picture books with storylines, humour and predictability
  • This is not about reading on their own, but sharing a story
  • Find a comfortable spot - when you and they are not busy and take a few minutes to settle down
  • Discuss the book cover - create excitement

4. After We Read

Picture
  • Talk about what you both thought of the story/book
  • Talk! Like it? Not like it? Why? Favourite parts?
  • Marks out of 10?
  • Talk about the characters, favourites? Why?
