15th- 30th June 2020
Hi everyone,
I hope you all enjoyed Health and Wellbeing Week and had a well deserved break from school work. Well done to all the boys and girls who got involved, I hope you had lots of fun!
Normally at this time of year in school we would start to wind down as June usually see's events like the school tour, sports day, teddy bear's picnic etc. As you know, the children would usually get less homework and would be encouraged to be active outdoors. It is for this reason that I encourage you to follow the 'Learning At Home' page (linked below) where there are lots of fun activities for your child to do. If you wish to continue finishing off the school books over the next few weeks that is no problem too.
Finally, I want to take the opportunity to say a big well done to all the boys and girls for all their hard work over the past few weeks. I am so proud of how they continued to try their best in these unforeseen circumstances. They really are so resilient and I have no doubt they will all be ready for first class! I would also like to say well done to all the parents who took on the role of 'Ms. Cleary' the past few weeks too!!!
I wish you all a safe, happy and enjoyable summer. I hope all the boys and girls have a nice rest after all their hard work and I look forward to seeing everybody in the new school year.
Happy holidays and take care,
Ms. Cleary.
P.S: I have some photographs from the year that I have yet to post so keep an eye out over the next few weeks!

Hello everyone,
I hope you all had a lovely bank holiday weekend and that all the boys and girls had lots of fun in the sun! Hopefully you got a chance to collect the children's books and if not you can still email [email protected] and arrange an appointment with the school to collect them this week. Thank you to everyone who has sent me an email to check in and I appreciate the pictures of all the work the children are doing at home.
A big well done to all the boys and girls who sent me names for our new foal! I received amazing pictures with lovely handwriting and it was really difficult to choose a winner. Well done to Ryan who chose the name Annie, with an excellent picture and fantastic sentence to match.
Wishing you all a lovely week,
Take care,
Ms. Cleary.

A New Arrival...Name Suggestions
What perfect timing for our theme of the farm! Last week, one of our horses in Tipperary had a baby! We learned before that a baby horse is called: a foal. Something you also might not have known is that we don't say girl or boy to describe a foal we say a 'filly' for a girl or a 'colt' for a boy. Our mare had a filly foal and the pictures above show her only one day old. I need all the boy's and girl's help now as we can't decide what to name our new filly. I would love if everyone could try choose a name, write it on a piece of paper and email me your suggestions! I will choose the best name by next weekend! I can't wait to hear all your ideas...

I hope all the boys and girls are getting on well with our new Wonderland reader, The Beach House. It is available to access online through the following link: my.cjfallon.ie/preview/student/2704/1.
Games:
How many- Ask your child to call out words from pages 18/19 e.g. she. Get them to count how many times the word she is mentioned on the two pages. Repeat with a new word.
Finish my sentence- Choose a sentence from page 20 or 21. Choose a sentence and call out the first three words in the sentence e.g. 'Then she puts'. Get your child to skim the page for the sentence and finish it!
Literacy: Story
This week's story is Cinderella. If you don't have this book at home you can find it on YouTube or ask your child if they know the story already and get them to tell you what happens. Ask them lots of questions such as their favourite part of the story and why, how did Cinderella's stepsisters treat her? how do you think Cinderella felt?
Extra activities:
Gaeilge: Sceal
This week the children can listen to a story we did previously- Luaithriona (Cinderella).
Before your child listens to the story you can show them the online flashcards here:
www.folensonline.ie/home/library/programmes/abair-liom-senior-infants/resources/

Project work: Summer
It is now officially summer in Ireland, so this week for our mini project we will look at the signs of summer. Your child can view this power point all about summer; www.twinkl.ie/resource/t-tp-891-ks1-when-is-summer-powerpoint
Encourage your child to draw pictures of :
- Clothes we wear in summer
- Weather in the summer
- Food we eat in the summer
- Your favourite summer holiday
Talk about signs of summer in nature when in the garden/ park/ on walks such as different flowers, trees full of green leaves, lots of bees etc. Get creative and looking forward to seeing all your lovely work!
Literacy: Capital Letters
- The boys and girls learned before that we use capital letters at the start of a sentence, 'i' on it's own, for people's names and places. See if they can correct teacher's sentences in a copy...
1. summer is one of the four seasons.
2. it comes after spring and before autumn.
3. the weather gets warmer in summer.
5. it is my favourite season because i get to eat lots of ice-cream!
6. i wear sun cream to protect my skin.
7. i like to play out in the sun with my friends. their names are ________________.
- Continue on with the next 2 letters in the Mrs. Murphy handwriting copies.
- Play Zed's Capital Letter game online here; www.roythezebra.com/reading-games/capital-letter-1.html
Literacy: Sounds/ Diagraphs
This week we are learning about the diagraph 'y' e.g. daisy, fairy, noisy. The children learned before that some letters can have a few different sounds- sometimes y helps out 'shy i' for words such as cry, sky, my and then in this case y has an 'ee' sound.
This saying might help: y is ee's best friend. She says ee too!
- Watch Mr. Thorne does phonics www.youtube.com/watch?v=naZWdYBJ70A
- Put any of these words into sentences; funny, cherry, dizzy, berry, happy, baby, only. Can you think of any more?
- Just phonics Senior Infants page 80 & 81: educateplus.ie/ppresource/just-phonics-senior-infants
Let's think, ask your child...
- If you could make a berry smoothie, what berries that end in 'y' could you put in it?
- Can you think of any feelings that end in 'y'? (happy, angry, lonely, crazy).
- How many of the dwarves in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves end in 'y'? Sneezy, Dopey, Grumpy, Doc, Happy, Bashful and Sleepy.

Literacy: Reader
I hope all the boys and girls are getting on well with our new Wonderland reader, The Beach House. It is available to access online through the following link: my.cjfallon.ie/preview/student/2704/1.
- Please read two pages per night with your child and point out any tricky words on each page.
- Ask your child to describe what is happening in the picture and how each character might be feeling based on their facial expression.
- Get them to predict what might happen on the next page.
Game: Capture a word!
Write the word take on a page. Ask your child to think of words that rhyme with take. Make a list of all the rhyming words e.g. bake, cake, lake, wake, snake, rake etc. Ask your child to choose one of the rhyming words e.g. cake. Ask them to draw a picture of their chosen word and write all the rhyming words inside it.
Game: I'm thinking of a word...
Begin by saying 'I'm thinking of a word on page 10. It begins with the /p/ sound. It has the letter t in it. You find it in a cupboard with cups and saucers (answer: plate). Give another example before your child takes turns describing a word.
Literacy: Story
This week's story is Barry the Fish with Fingers. If you have this story at home you can read it to your child or you can access it on You Tube.
- Discuss the title and the cover of the book- 'do you think Barry is an unusual fish?'
- Puffy, the puffer fish, blows bubbles. Think of different words to describe bubbles. You might try blowing bubbles to help you think of some new vocabulary.
- 'Barry was no ordinary fish'. What does 'ordinary' mean?
- After the story ask your child to retell you the story by describing what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Extra activities:
- Barry is described as 'amazing' in the story. Describe/write a story about another amazing creature.
- Use finger puppets to tell a story that Barry might perform to his friends.
- Can you make up/write a new adventure for Barry and his friends?
- Look at the illustrations in the book and create a new fish friend for Barry.
- Design a new animal that has some body parts from different creatures.
- Try some finger painting like Barry does!

Maths: Length/ Calendar
- This week's topic for Maths is length. Please watch this episode from RTÉ's Home School Hub where Múinteoir Ray teaches how to measure length using non standard units. www.rte.ie/player/series/1st-and-2nd-class-rté-home-school-hub/SI0000006858?epguid=PL000003238
- We have covered this topic preciously in class but this is great revision for the children. Vocabulary for this topic include: Long, short, tall, longer than, shorter than, longest, shortest, the same length etc. If possible your child can do pages 106 & 107 from the Planet Maths ebook: www.folensonline.ie/home/library/programmes/planet-mathssi/ebook/
- Alternatively you can use objects you have at home and get your child to first estimate how many lego blocks (or any alternative!) are needed to measure e.g. a shoe/ lunchbox etc then measure to find out.
Here are some interactive games for your child to play;
content.folensonline.ie/programmes/PlanetMaths/PMSI/resources/activitya/pm_si_104/index.html

Calendar
At the start of every day in school we would discuss what day and date it was, including the month and season of the year. The children had started to get into the habit of dating their work; e.g. 26/4/20. It would be a good idea for your child to continue this at home by dating their work in the top right hand corner of the page. There is also an interactive calendar here that your child can use to tell today's date and fill in the blanks:
www.starfall.com/h/holiday/calendar/?t=292843196
Children should also continue to write their name on their work. We used this rhyme: 'the first thing I do is always the same, I take out my pencil and write my name!' Encourage your child to write their surname too as this is also good practice.
Science
The are lots of fun and interesting experiment ideas for your child on ScienceFun.org. Let me know if you try any experiments! www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/
20th-24th April 2020

Our theme this week in Maths is capacity. Hopefully your child will be able to have lots of fun experimenting with water outside in the lovely weather we're getting!
- The children can experiment through play by filling and emptying different sized and shaped containers.
- Try and encourage your child to use the following vocabulary while doing so; full, empty, nearly full, holds more, holds less, holds the same amount, holds the most, holds the least, pour, fill up to the top, enough, level...
- Here are some visuals to help: www.twinkl.ie/resource/t-n-117-capacity-display-posters-jugs
- Ideas of containers your child can use include: cups, eggcups, jugs, jam jars, saucepans, empty milk cartons, bowls, basins, buckets and plastic bottles.
Solve this!
Here are some tricky mental maths puzzles your child can solve mentally or by using containers:
- If a jug hold 4 cups of water, how many cups would I need to fill 2 jugs?
- A glass holds 6 eggcups of water altogether. If I poured 4 eggcups of water into the glass how many more would I need to fill it completely?
- A saucepan holds 5 jugs of water altogether. How many saucepans can I fill with 10 jugs of water?
Worksheets
- Your child can then complete pages 122 & 123 in the Planet Maths online eBook through the following link www.folensonline.ie/home/library/programmes/planet-mathssi/ebook/.

Writing
- Continue with the Mrs. Murphy handwriting copy, doing 2 capital letters per week. Along with this, get the children to write out people's names and places with that letter e.g. M- Michael, Mayo, Mcdonalds etc.
- Encourage the children to do 'free writing' - which is allowing the children to sound out words themselves without help.
* Keeping a diary 'Today I...'
*Procedural writing- writing out step by step 'how to' e.g how to make toast/ how to brush your teeth/ how to play hide and seek etc.
*Make a shopping list/ jobs list for your parents
*Write a note/ letter to your friend/ grandparent/ teacher.
Sounds
- Our sound for this week is 'er.'
- Try and get your child to write/ draw pictures of words they can think of that have 'er' in them; e.g. mixer, dancer, burger, jumper.
- Do a sound hunt around the house and count/ list all the objects you find!
- Search 'Phonics ER sound song 2' on YouTube for the jolly song and 'er' words/ phonics phase 3.
Reading/ oral language
- Encourage your child to read as much as possible.
- There are plenty of read aloud story books on YouTube so you can also get your child to listen to a book and then draw their favourite part of the story/ retell the story to you or their siblings!
- Get the children to read their favourite book then design an alternative cover for the book.
- Encourage your child to make up an alternative ending to a book by using their imaginations!
Maths
- Our topic for Maths this week is weight using the vocabulary heavy, light, big, small, heavier, lighter, the same weight as...
- Encourage your child to find things in your home and label them heavy/ light.
- You can play games for example: 30 seconds- where the children must answer one question in 30 seconds...
Name 3 light/heavy types of fruit.
Name 3 light/heavy vegetables.
Name an animal which is lighter/much lighter than a dog.
Name an animal which is heavier/much heavier than a dog.
- Card games are good for counting on, for example get a deck of cards, put 10 cards facing down and choose 2/3 cards and add the numbers together. Write down the numbers each time and the person with the biggest number at the end wins.
