Back to School!!

After six long months we are finally back to school! The children are delighted to see and play with all their friends again. They have been so good working very hard as we cover all our sounds, letters and numbers again.
This year we would like all children to
  • carry their own hand sanitizer
  • have a pencil case with twistables and a writing pencil which they will leave in school (we realize some children have already done this).
  • Have a large schoolbag which fits their lunch, water bottle etc. which they can easily open and close.
  • Ensure names are on everything-clothes, pencils, lunchboxes etc.

For September we will be doing revision on junior infant work. I am only looking for one book from junior infants. I have most people's copy but if anyone still has this book 'Just Phonics, Junior Infants' will you send it into school with your child please, thanks.

22nd June 2020

So we have made it to the last week of the school term. I know it has been a strange end to everyone's first year of school but we can now look forward to meeting up with friends, family and loved ones over the summer knowing that it September we will all be back in school again! Well done to all the boys and girls (and parents!!!) who have kept up the school work, I know it has been hard but it will pay off! I am so proud of how well you've all gotten on during what I'm sure has been a stressful few month, even for little heads. Now is the time for everyone to enjoy the holidays and to relax.
I hope everyone has a fantastic summer, and I already can't wait to hear all about it again in August. :)

Reading-continue to work through the Tricky Words booklet, try to use new reading material either online or through the library. The library are now offering a click & collect service.
Jolly Phonics- revise sounds oi, ue, er & ar. These are the last sounds to revise so please continue to go back over the previous sounds as the more revision the better. The children will find these tricky as we didn't have much revision of these sounds in school so please spend time on these.
Writing- new letters x & z. Complete pages in Ready to Write. Practice previous letters-c,o,a,d,g,q,i,j,l,t,k,v,w,r,n,m,e,s,p, f, u & y.
Maths- Continue working on number through mental maths games & any outstanding pages in Planet Maths.
If you've any questions or need any guidance with work please continue to e-mail me alice5maher@gmail.com
15th June 2020
I hope everyone enjoyed the health and wellbeing week last week, and tried out lots of different sports & activities at home.
We are midway through June, normally in school we would be winding down for summer and the children would be having sports day, going on school tours, having a teddy’s bear picnic etc. However we all know things are a little different this year. For the last few weeks we want to encourage some fun activities to try so I would encourage everyone to take a look at the 'Learning at Home' page which has been updated. I also have uploaded a few ideas of family days out or activities to try at home too, over the next few weeks.
However I also know that many families are enjoying the routine and structure of homeschool so I will continue to update with things to be covered for the next few weeks.

Reading-continue to work through the Tricky Words booklet, try to use new reading material either online or through the library.
Jolly Phonics- revise sounds sh, th, qu & ou. Use games and songs to revise the sounds. The children will find these tricky as we didn't have much revision of these sounds in school so please spend time on these.
Writing- new letters u & y. Complete pages in Ready to Write. Practice previous letters-c,o,a,d,g,q,i,j,l,t,k,v,w,r,n,m,e,s,p & f.
Maths- Continue working on number through mental maths games & any outstanding pages in Planet Maths. You could revise 2D shapes also (circle, square, rectangle & triangle) also as I don't believe we completed this in Planet Maths-p100, 101. Discuss characteristics of the shape, see if they can find them in real life e.g. in tiles, on a cup etc. Emphasis 2D shapes are flat.
If you've any questions or need any guidance with work please continue to e-mail me alice5maher@gmail.com

Ideas for family days out or activities in Dublin

  1. Have a day out at the beach-there are so many lovely beaches in Dublin- Dollymount, Sandymount, Seapoint etc.
  2. Bake a cake-my favourite is chocolate!
  3. Have a teddy bear’s picnic in different parks- Corkagh park, Phoenix park, Tymon Park, Griffeen Park etc.
  4. Play tennis- Courts are open in Bushy park, Marley Park and other spots around the city
  5. Create a shop at home-what are you going to sell? How much is everything going to cost?
  6. Go for a walk up the Dublin mountains-what can you see? Can you spot the sea? Can you see Clondalkin?
  7. Make up a dance or copy a dance on Tik Tok
  8. Take turns hiding toys around the house or garden and drawing a treasure map to find them.
  9. Draw or paint a card to send to extended family-Grandparents, aunties, uncles etc.
  10. Create your own musical instruments e.g. rice in a tin, elastic bands on a tissue box etc.
  11. Try your hand at coding- I hear Codemonkey is great.
  12. Make lemonade!
  13. Practice reading your favourite book to your teddies
  14. Go for a walk in Dun Laoghaire and get a teddy’s ice cream!
  15. Go to airfield estate-it’s a city farm in Dundrum but you need to prebook at the moment.
  16. Go to the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin. It’s such a lovely day out especially when the weather is fine!
  17. Click & Collect from Clondalkin library-you can see about checking out a book from the library
  18. Look at the National Gallery website, it has loads of creative ideas to try at home as well as videos of the gallery
  19. Try cosmic kids yoga on YouTube.
  20. Walk the grand canal-can you spot any boats?

Get outside, stay safe and have fun:)

Reading, Jolly Phonics & Tricky Words
02/06/2020

Writing
02/06/2020

  • Continue revising nursery rhymes.
  • This week the children should read 'Little Red Riding Hood'. This is a probably a familiar story for the children so discuss the story, ask them to read words etc.
  • Discuss the title/author/ pictures/ what will happen next/ what happened after the story ended/ retell you what happened in their own words/ what their favourite part was. While reading ask them to practice reading some sight or tricky words.
  • So far the children have revised s, a, t, i,p, n, c, k, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, ng,v & oo. This week if they could revise y, x & ch.  We are continuing to revise our blends (blends or diagraphs are when two sounds come together to form a new sound). 'ch' like chair, choose, chip. Children often find these trickier. Spend time on these sounds as we don't want to confuse the children. If you think it might be too soon for your child to move on to diagraphs use this week to revise previous sounds covered.
  • Games to revise phonics
  1. Stick the sounds around your home, on cardboard, post-it's etc. You could make it a game you only want them to find the 'x' sound etc.
  2. A sound hunt,
  3. Beat mum/dad in thinking of words that have 'ch',
  4. A race to who can draw a picture with the most amount of words that have 'x' sound
  5. I spy with my little eye
  6. Make a pile items with 'y' sound..yellow, yak, boot..which one doesn't belong..why/why not,
  7. Have the children practice writing the letters outside using sticks, chalk whatever you have near you.
  8. If you have any other games that work please let me know, I'd love to share it with others :)
  • There are worksheets linked below to help them with their revision, for those who have printer access.
  • Most people have collected books to please do the corresponding pages in their smaller 'Just Phonics' books.
  • Continue to work on the tricky words below, they are listed in the order they should be learnt. So the order is blue, yellow, green, pink, red & orange. Try to revise these words often..a little and often is the best way to do it. Don't rush onto the next level too quickly..take your time focus on one colour at a time.
  • I would encourage everyone to keep using the HarperCollins website. It is full of reading material suitable for the boys & girls, log in details are below. Hopefully it won't be long until the libraries are open and the children can read 'real' books again :)

Gaelige
03/06/2020

Well done to everyone keeping up the Gaeilge you are doing a super job!
  • Try practicing some basics 'Dia dhuit' & 'Dia is muire duit' 'Conas atá tú' 'go maith/níl mé go maith' 'Cé thusa?''Is mise .......'. Ask them to 'cuir lámh suas/síos, cuir a cos suas/síos''Dun an doras' 'oscail an doras' 'bain díot do chota' etc..
  • This week we'll use the theme an trá for this week , use any Irish you have to practice this..an trá-the beach, snámh-swim, gaineamh-sand, liathróid trá-beach ball, tuáille trá-beach towel.
  • We covered a song before in class called 'téidí beag alainn' you will be able to find it on the Abair liom website.
  • If you get stuck for a word foclóir.ie is a great quick translation website But don't put pressure on yourself..any Irish at all is better than none :)
  • Continue to practice free writing. As the weather is so good I'll the worksheet to the summer walk again in case anyone want to try it. Try complete pages 52 & 53 in 'What a Wonderful World' they are all about summer.
  • Practice writing some of our tricky words-I, the, me, she, he, we etc.
  • While in school we covered the letters c, o, a, d, g, q, i, j & l. Previously the children covered t, k, v, w, r, n, m, e & s.
  • This week the children can practice writing the letters p & f.
  • Let them see you write it a few times, get them to write it on their hands, on your back, can you make it with playdough, can they write in out in the sand/soil/?
  • Write out the letters p & f with a highlighter or dots and let the boys and girls trace over your highlighter or dots with a pencil.
  • A rhyme for writing p 'down, back up on the same line and around'.
  • A rhyme for writing f 'around, down lift your pencil off and line across'.
  • There is a bundle of worksheets to revise all the letters, I previously uploaded this. Please complete the corresponding p & f pages in Ready to Write.
  • If you are having a day where writing might be a bit tough consider working on fine motor skills. These are vitally important for the children to build up in order to become super writers. Activities for fine motor control are generally quite fun and the children love them. A quick google will give you plenty of ideas or feel free to get in touch and I can create a list using things most people would have at home. :)

Maths
03/06/2020

  • Continue to use the mental maths games..even just 3-5 minutes of them a day can help keep all the number work fresh in the boys and girls heads. I've linked a document below with some examples.
  • Continue to revise days of the week, months of the year. What month is it..what month comes before/after May..what day is it..what day will it be tomorrow etc.
  • Continue to revise the formation of numbers 1,2,3,4 & 5.  Complete any pages in the Planet Maths to revise the number formation.
  • Continue to work on the topic of height. This is very practical so it's best taking a hand on approach to this topic- go outside and find thing to measure! Which do they think is taller the house or the tree? Try to start off using non standard units of measure..using lego pieces, cups, pencils anything! The point of this is to use the language of taller, tallest, smaller, smallest etc.
  • As most people have collected their books at this time we can use this week as a catch up week.We have now covered the topics of money, capacity, time, spacial awareness & height at home. You could revise these topics done at home by using their Planet Maths books.
  • Money-pg 122-128.
  • Capacity- pg 90-91
  • Time- pg62-63
  • Spacial awareness- p94,
  • Height- pgs 30, 31
  • You do not need to complete all of these pages these are just here to help you in your revision week.

Free Writing

Oh wow I was very lucky to be sent two piece of some more free writing this morning. One by Dylan and one by Sofia. I love the way Dylan leaves lots of space between his words. I love how Sofia is practicing writing some tricky words like it & was.
She wasn't the only one sunbathing at the weekend, I know I definitely was too!
I'd love to see any more examples of free writing the boys and girls have done, and remember they're all at such different stages of writing at the moment and that's fine!

Writing
25/05/20

  • Continue revising nursery rhymes.
  • This week the children should read 'The Teddy Bears Picnic'. This is a probably a familiar story for the children so discuss the story, ask them to read words etc. Maybe bring them on their own teddy bear's picnic?
  • Discuss the title/author/ pictures/ what will happen next/ what happened after the story ended/ retell you what happened in their own words/ what their favourite part was. While reading ask them to practice reading some sight or tricky words.
  • So far the children have revised s, a, t, i,p, n, c, k, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or, z & w. This week if they could revise ng, v, & oo.  We are continuing to revise our blends (blends or diagraphs are when two sounds come together to form a new sound). 'ng' like ding, ring, bring. Children often find these trickier. Spend time on these sounds as we don't want to confuse the children. If you think it might be too soon for your child to move on to diagraphs use this week to revise previous sounds covered. In school we learnt there was a small 'oo' like look, book, cook and a big 'OO' like moon, soon, boom
  • Games to revise phonics
  1. Stick the sounds around your home, on cardboard, post-it's etc. You could make it a game you only want them to find the 'z' sound etc.
  2. A sound hunt,
  3. Beat mum/dad in thinking of words that have 'w',
  4. A race to who can draw a picture with the most amount of words that have 'ie' sound
  5. I spy with my little eye
  6. Make a pile items with 'w' sound..web, soap, water, wizard..which one doesn't belong..why/why not,
  7. Have the children practice writing the letters outside using sticks, chalk whatever you have near you.
  8. If you have any other games that work please let me know, I'd love to share it with others :)
  • There are worksheets linked below to help them with their revision, for those who have printer access.
  • CJ Fallon has made all their online resources available to parents. Here you can access our workbook 'Sounds like Phonics' and our class readers.
  • Continue to work on the tricky words below, they are listed in the order they should be learnt. So the order is blue, yellow, green, pink, red & orange. Try to revise these words often..a little and often is the best way to do it. Don't rush onto the next level too quickly..take your time focus on one colour at a time.

Gaeilge
25/05/20

Well done to everyone keeping up the Gaeilge you are doing a super job!
  • Try practicing some basics 'Dia dhuit' & 'Dia is muire duit' 'Conas atá tú' 'go maith/níl mé go maith' 'Cé thusa?''Is mise .......'. Ask them to 'cuir lámh suas/síos, cuir a cos suas/síos''Dun an doras' 'oscail an doras' 'bain díot do chota' etc..
  • This week we'll have the theme of picnic for this week , use any Irish you have to practice this..picnic-picnic, teddy-teidí, basket-ciseán, picnic blanket-blainceád picnice, sandwich-ceapaire, cake-cáca, plate-platá. Again use the phrases from last week 'Ba mhaith liom-I would like...' Tá ocras orm-I am hungry, Tá tart orm- I am thristy
  • This will tie in well with english story Teddy Bears Picnic-again you could go on a picnic yourselves, set one up for teddies in a garden, balcony, green whatever space you have :)
  • We covered a song before in class called 'téidí beag alainn' you will be able to find it on the Abair liom website.
  • If you get stuck for a word foclóir.ie is a great quick translation website But don't put pressure on yourself..any Irish at all is better than none :)
  • This week I'd love the boys and girls to go on a summer walk to see what they can find! I've linked a worksheet below, however if you can't print it just use the headings the weather, living things & summer flowers. The children can draw pictures and then if they'd like try to write underneath the pictures.
  • Continue to practice free writing.
  • Practice writing some of our tricky words-I, the, me, she, he, we etc.
  • While in school we covered the letters c, o, a, d, g, q, i, j & l. Previously the children covered t, k, v, w, r, n, m & e.
  • As always ensure the children are using lower case letters, watch their pencil grip.
  • This week the children can practice writing the letter s.
  • Let them see you write it a few times, get them to write it on their hands, on your back, can you make it with playdough, can they write in out in the sand/soil/?
  • Write out the letters s with a highlighter or dots and let the boys and girls trace over your highlighter or dots with a pencil.
  • A rhyme for writing s 'around to the left and then around to the right'
  • There is a bundle of worksheets to revise all the letters, I previously uploaded this. Please only work on letters we have covered. For those who have collected books please complete the corresponding s page.

Maths
25/05/20

  • Continue to use the mental maths games..even just 3 minutes of them a day can help keep all the number work fresh in the boys and girls heads.
  • Folensauth.folensonline.ie/login?signin=3e74084ce0c23579216a1a1a4019c5ff have made their online books and resources available to parents. I' ve listed registration details below but I think most people have collected the children's books at this stage.
  • We have now covered the topics of money, capacity & time at home. You could revise these topics done at home by using their planet maths books.
  • Continue to work on the topic of 'spatial awareness'. This topic is all about the language, you want to promote the language of position: over, under, up, down, on, beside, in directions: moving in straight/curved lines, in a circle, finding own space. Search in images, make a map, giving directions.
  • This week we will concentrate on the topic of height. This is very practical so it's best taking a hand on approach to this topic- go outside and find thing to measure! Which do they think is taller the house or the tree? The plant or the car? The gate or the bin?
  • Try to start off using non standard units of measure..using lego pieces, cups, pencils anything! The point of this is to use the language of taller, tallest, smaller, smallest etc.
  • In infants we don't use centimeters but if you wanted you could have a look at a metre..how high is it? Am I taller than a metre?
  • Get the children to make some predictions..who is taller
  • myself, Ms. Kinlough or Ms. Dempsey,
  • Myself, Tracey or Pamela??
  • Is teacher taller than than their parents..I'll give my height out later in the week when I receive some predictions !! :)
I'm going to set everyone an extra challenge this week. Seeing as the weather has been so nice I want everyone to try and get outside and practice some letter formation & writing! Children remember the formation of letters better when they use different materials, or try it out different ways. This is only informal and a bit of fun so please don't feel under any pressure! I'll leave some pictures below to help spark the imagination..as always the boys and girls will be full of ideas so you could ask them what is the best material to use.
If you do try this out I'd love to see some pictures, and I'll upload them here :)
I wonder what everyone is going to use sticks, leaves, soil, petals....

Reading, Jolly Phonics & Tricky Words 18/05/2020

  • Continue revising nursery rhymes.
  • This week the children should read 'Each Peach Pear Plum'. This is a very visual story so take the time to look at the pictures, for those who do not have the book I've linked a youtube video reading the book down below.
  • Discuss the title/author/ pictures/ what will happen next/ what happened after the story ended/ retell you what happened in their own words/ what their favourite part was. While reading ask them to practice reading some sight or tricky words.
  • So far the children have revised s, a, t, i,p, n, c, k, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, ai, j, oa, ie & ee. This week if they could revise or, z & w.  We are continuing to revise our blends (blends or diagraphs are when two sounds come together to form a new sound). 'Or' like fork, corn, horse. Children often find these trickier, as such I have only listed 3 sounds to revise this week. Spend time on these sounds as we don't want to confuse the children. If you think it might be too soon for your child to move on to diagraphs use this week to revise previous sounds covered. Also often sounds like 'z' often come at the end of words..draw the children's attention to this.
Write them out on pieces of paper to find around your home, see if your child can find them in a book, get your child to try writing them out themselves, try writing them in chalk next time you are out. These words are important to learn so the boys and girls can progress with their reading.
  • I would encourage everyone to have a look on HarperCollins website. it is full of reading material suitable for the boys & girls https://connect.collins.co.uk/school/Primary/BigCatBookShelf.aspx Click on the Teacher Portal, use the login parents@harpercollins.co.uk and password Parents20! select Collins Big Cat and once there you can choose the level most appropriate for your child. I would suggest start at the lowest level of PinkA and then they can work through further levels if it is appropriate for them.

Gaeilge
18/05/2020

Well done to everyone keeping up the Gaeilge...as I said before don't worry if it's not 'grammatically correct' they won't know and the children generally all really enjoy Irish.
  • Try practicing 'Dia dhuit' & 'Dia is muire duit' 'Conas atá tú' 'go maith/níl mé go maith' 'Cé thusa?' and 'Is mise .......'. or any other Irish you have! These could be done using a teddy or puppet. Ask them to 'cuir lámh suas/síos, cuir a cos suas/síos''Dun an doras' 'oscail an doras' 'bain díot do chota' etc..
  • This week we'll have the theme of siopa milseán, use any Irish you have to practice this..siopa-shop, milseán-sweets, airgead-money. líreacán-lollipop, seacláid-chocolate, criospaí-crisps, siopadóir-shopkeeper. And again if you'd like to extend them 'Ba mhaith liom-I would like...'
  • This is a fun one that the children enjoy-you could set up your own siopa milseán at home and take turns being the shopkeeper.
  • If you get stuck for a word foclóir.ie is a great quick translation website But don't put pressure on yourself..any Irish at all is better than none :)

Reading, Jolly Phonics & Tricky Words
11/05/2020

  • Continue revising nursery rhymes with the boys and girls. The nursery rhymes are important as they allow the boys and girls to practice their rhyming skills..please try varying the rhymes if it's getting repetitive.
  • This week to read I'm going to link two stories below, 'Everybody Worries' & 'Staying at Home'. Both of these stories deal with having worries about the coronavirus and about having to stay home. I'm sure most of you have talked to the boys and girls about what is going on but these stories will help them process and understand a little deeper how important it is to stay home and that it is okay to have worries about what's going on.
  • Continue to discuss the story...what the name of the book it (title) who wrote it (author)..discuss the pictures..what they think will happen next..get them to draw a picture of what happened after the story ended. While reading ask them to practice reading some sight or tricky words.
  • After reading ask the boys and girls to tell you what happened in their own words, what happened at the beginning, middle & end of the story. What their favourite part was, or try reenacting the story using puppets or teddies!

'Oa' like goat, coat, boat, 'ie' like tie, lie, pie and 'ee' like three, free and see. Children often find these trickier, as such I have only listed 3 sounds to revise this week. Spend time on these sounds as we don't want to confuse the children. If you think it might be too soon for your child to move on to diagraphs use this week to revise previous sounds covered.

  • When your getting dressed in the morning you could go over the vocab, let the children dress up a doll or teddy, ask them to go get some stocaí etc.
  • If you get stuck for a word foclóir.ie is a great quick translation website :)
  • Try the folens website for some games and worksheets.

Writing
18/05/2020

  • Continue to practice free writing..these will be lovely to keep in years to come when remembering this odd time. Please continue to email me any samples..particularly if you haven't had a chance yet.
  • Practice writing some of our tricky words-I, the, me, she, he, we etc.
  • While in school we covered the letters c, o, a, d, g, q, i, j & l. Previously the children covered t, k, v, w, r, n & m.
  • As always ensure the children are using lower case letters, watch their pencil grip.
  • This week the children can practice writing the letter e.
  • Let them see you write it a few times, get them to write it on their hands, on your back, can you make it with playdough, can they write in out in the sand/soil/?
  • Write out the letters e with a highlighter or dots and let the boys and girls trace over your highlighter or dots with a pencil.
  • When writing the letter e think of a boiled egg 'lift off the top and then scoop out the egg'
  • There is a bundle of worksheets to revise all the letters, I previously uploaded this. Please only work on letters we have covered.
  • If you are having a day where writing might be a bit tough consider working of fine motor skills. These are vitally important for the children to build up in order to become super writers. Activities for fine motor control are generally quite fun and the children love them. A quick google will give you plenty of ideas or feel free to get in touch and I can create a list using things most people would have at home. :)

Maths
18/05/2020

  • Continue to use the mental maths games..even just 3 minutes of them a day can help keep all the number work fresh in the boys and girls heads. I've linked a document below with some examples.
  • Continue to revise days of the week, months of the year. What month is it..what month comes before/after May..what day is it..what day will it be tomorrow etc.
  • Continue to revise the formation of numbers 1,2,3,4 & 5.
  • Folensauth.folensonline.ie/login?signin=3e74084ce0c23579216a1a1a4019c5ff have made their online books and resources available to parents. Register as a teacher and use the roll number Prim20. If you search Planet Maths Junior Infants you will be able to access the children's maths books and some online games for them to try.
  • We have now covered the topics of money, capacity & started on time at home.
  • Continue to work on the topic of Time if you haven't already. I've listed activities below last week-work on sequencing, looking at a clock, making a clock, reading a clock.
  • This week if the children could work on the topic of 'spatial awareness'. This is another one where it is all about the language, you want to promote the language of position: over, under, up, down, on, beside, in directions: moving in straight/curved lines, in a circle, finding own space.
  • Give them a picture or a book with a lot of pictures like 'Where's Wally' would be ideal. Can you find x..what is above x..what is beside x..
  • Can they give instructions back to you?
  • Ask the boys and girls to draw a map..could be of your home, the school, Clondalkin. Send them to me and I'll upload them here :)

Writing
11/05/2020

  • Thank you so much to everyone who sent me samples of free writing..I was so impressed with them all! I uploaded each sample I received so if you haven't yet please scroll down and you can show your child their writing on the website. Everyone has improved so much...each child is at a different stage in the writing process so even though some of them might not be writing proper words there has still been such a fantastic improvement in their pencil control and their letter formation.
  • Continue to encourage the children to practice their writing in informal ways..such as while playing or writing beside their pictures.
Previously the children covered t, k, v, w & r.
  • As always ensure the children are using lower case letters, watch their pencil grip and ensure their feet are flat on the floor, they are sitting up straight and one hand is keeping the page still.
  • This week the children can practice writing the letters n & m. They are quite simple so I'm going to ask you to practice two letters.
  • Let them see you write it a few times, get them to write it on their hands & on your back.
  • Write out the letters n & m with a highlighter or dots and let the boys and girls trace over your highlighter or dots with a pencil.
  • When writing the letter n 'short line down, up and draw a hump' make sure they don't lift their pencil until the whole letter is done.
  • The rhyme for m is ' down, up, hump, up and final hump'
  • There is a bundle of worksheets to revise all the letters, I previously uploaded this. Please only work on letters we have covered.
  • I've also linked some more sheets to practice pencil control if you wish.
  • These can be easily made by yourself with of you do not have access to a printer. :)

  • I hope everyone is enjoying all the mental maths games! Continue to use them..even just 3 minutes of them a day can help keep all the number work fresh in the boys and girls heads.
  1. Ask the boys and girls to count to 10, to 20, to 30
  2. pick a random number to start counting at, count backwards (a blastoff!),
  3. take turns counting to 10..you say a number they say the next number etc.,
  4. tell you what number comes before/after a number,
  5. having pieces of paper with 1-5 on it and put it in order,
  6. Roll a dice..what number is it..will the next number be higher/lower etc.
  7.  if you have 5 marbles and you put 2 in a tin how many should be in your hand etc.
  • Continue to revise days of the week, months of the year. What month is it..what month comes before/after May..what day is it..what day will it be tomorrow etc.
  • Continue to revise the formation of numbers 1,2,3,4 & 5. These can be done through worksheets online or ones you make yourself if you do not have a printer. Another option is even using chalk outside.

  • We will continue to work on the topic of Time. Last week the boys and girls were sequencing activities, the day and using the language of time. I listed some activities to try at home below
  • This week we are going to look at the clock. Take a clock you have at home, look at the numbers..talk about how they go from 1-12, there's two hands, what direction the hands move etc.
  • Set a timer and ask them to run on the spot for 10 seconds...how long do they think 10 seconds is?? Do this again with a minute etc.
  • In junior infants the children need to be able to read the clock on the hour, so 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock etc. Practice looking at the clock and the showing that when it's o'clock the big hand is at 12 and the small hand is pointing to a number
  • Throughout the day ask them to read the clock..at breakfast, at lunch, after homeschool..get them used to looking at a clock.
  • Try making your own clock-look below at my clock!! If you do make your own clock please send me a picture :)
  • Play what time is it Mr. Wolf!

Reading, Jolly Phonics & Tricky Words
05/05/2020

  • Continue revising nursery rhymes with the boys and girls. The nursery rhymes are important as they allow the boys and girls to practice their rhyming skills..they can be ones which they know already like 'Jack & Jill', 'Humpty Dumpty' or try varying it up if it is getting repetitive etc.
  • This week's story would have been 'Little Whale Song' if you have it at home try reading it with your child. If you do not have this book I have linked a read aloud from youtube below.
  • While reading discuss what the name of the book it (title) who wrote it (author)..discuss the pictures..what they think will happen next..get them to draw a picture of what happened after the story ended.
  • While reading the story ask the boys and girls to read some sight words..THE / IS/ ON/ NO/ HERE/ A/ MILK/ WHERE/ WHAT/ CAKE/ MAKE/ BOX/ BAG/ EVERYTHING etc..
  • After reading ask the boys and girls to tell you what happened in their own words, what happened at the beginning, middle & end of the story. What their favourite part was, or try reenacting the story using puppets or teddies!
  • So far the children have revised s, a, t, i,p, n, c, k, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l & f. This week if they could revise b, ai, & j. This week we are revising the first of our blends- blends or diagraphs are when two sounds come together to form a new sound. So 'ai' as in pain, rain, main etc. The children often find these trickier, as such I have only listed 3 sounds to revise this week. Spend time on these sounds as we don't want to confuse the children.
  • Try sticking the sounds around your home, on cardboard, post-it's etc. You could make it a game you only want them to find the j sound etc.
  • Game to help revise the sounds could be a sound hunt, beat mum/dad in thinking of words beginning with, draw a picture of things beginning with g, I spy with my little eye while out walking, make a pile items beginning with g..glass, grass, girl & t-shirt..which one doesn't belong..why/why not, have the children practice writing the letters outside using sticks, chalk whatever you have near you.
  • If you have any other games that work please let me know, I'd love to share it with others :)
  • There are worksheets linked below to help them with their revision, if you do not have access to a printer these can be easily made at home :)
  • CJ Fallon has made all their online resources available to parents. Here you can access our workbook 'Sounds like Phonics' and our class readers.

Writing 05/05/2020

  • I got some fantastic pictures during the week of boys & girls who were writing their name and spelling words for their phonics work!! A particular well done to Brandon & Ceoladh...I was very impressed with both your writing WELL DONE!!
  • Continue to practice writing their name, most are able to do this so if your child is still struggling with this maybe pay particular attention to this.
  • This week I'd like you to get the boys and girls to do some free writing, this could be  about any news they have or what they have been up to. Every child is at a different level for this, so allow them to write at their own level..encourage them to 'sound out' words and to think of tricky words to write...it will all makes sense to them! Let them write it without help..after you might ask them to "remind" you what they wrote. If needed you can write what it says beside their writing. I'd love to see these so please take a picture and e-mail me, I'll upload any pictures I receive :)
  • While in school we covered the letters c, o, a, d, g, q, i, j & l. Previously the children covered t, k, v & w.
  • As always ensure the children are using lower case letters, watch their pencil grip and ensure their feet are flat on the floor, they are sitting up straight and one hand is keeping the page still.
  • This week the children can practice writing the letter r. Try and focus on getting the formation correct here as it is needed for the next letters n & m.
  • Let them see you write it a few times, get them to write it on their hands & on your back.
  • Write out the letter w with a highlighter or dots and let the boys and girls trace over your highlighter or dots with a pencil.
  • When writing the letter r 'up, down, half a hump' make sure they don't lift their pencil until the whole letter is done.
  • There is a bundle of worksheets to revise all the letters, I previously uploaded this. Please only work on letters we have covered.
  • I've also linked some sheets to practice pencil control if you wish.
  • These can be easily made by yourself with of you do not have access to a printer. :)
  • Encourage them to write while they are playing. Create a post office at home..send a postcard or letter etc.

Maths 05/05/2020

  • I hope everyone is enjoying all the mental maths games! They are fun way to revise number work.
  • Ask the boys and girls to count to 10, to 20, to 30, pick a random number to start counting at, count backwards (a blastoff!), take turns counting to 10..you say a number they say the next number etc., tell you what number comes before/after a number, having pieces of paper with 1-5 on it and put it in order, if you have 5 marbles and you put 2 in a tin how many should be in your hand etc. There are so many counting games and activities just doing 5 minutes of this a day will really help the children with their number work.
  • Continue to revise days of the week, months of the year. Particularly as we are in a new month..look at a calender..what month comes before/after May..what day is it..what day will it be tomorrow etc.
  • Continue to revise the formation of numbers 1,2,3,4 & 5. These can be done through worksheets online or ones you make yourself if you do not have a printer. Another option is even using chalk outside.
  • Playing board games like snakes and ladders, cards, and doing jigsaws all help to develop mathematical skills.
  • We have now covered the topics of money and capacity at home.
  • Capacity is a really great activity to do outside. Try use the language full/nearly full/empty/holds more/holds less/holds as much as. Fill and empty containers of various sizes, discuss using smaller containers to fill larger containers, ask them questions like do you think the egg cup is going to fill this jug?
  • The new topic I'd like the boys and girls to focus on is a time. This one is a biggie so we will continue to cover it next week.
  • Try to get them to sequence activities (tricky at the moment I know!!) but breakfast, homeschool, park/afternoon activity, dinner, putting pjs on, washing teeth etc..
  • Have you developed any activity that you only do at the weekend? How do you start your mornings off?
  • Again language is important to first, next, then, last, morning, evening, daytime, month, season, day, weekday, weekends etc.
  • There are some number sequencing activities on Topmarks.co.uk..I have linked some sequencing activities below..one of which is a handwashing one which is quite appropriate at the moment!!

Well done to people keeping up the Gaeilge..I got some lovely videos of boys and girls speaking gaeilge and they made my day!! As I said before don't worry if it's not 'grammatically correct' they won't know and the children generally all really enjoy Irish.
  • Try even practicing 'Dia dhuit' & 'Dia is muire duit' 'Conas atá tú' 'go maith/níl mé go maith' 'Cé thusa?' and 'Is mise .......'. or any other Irish you have! These could be done using a teddy or puppet.
  • Ask them to 'cuir lámh suas/síos, cuir a cos suas/síos''Dun an doras' 'oscail an doras' 'bain díot do chota' etc..
  • We would have been revising the theme of éadaí at the moment, use any Irish you have to practice this..bríste-trousers, t-léine-t-shirt, geansaí-jumper, guna-dress, sciorta-skirt, bríste gearr-shorts, stocaí-socks, bróga-shoes, hata-hat, caipín-cap
  • When your getting dressed in the morning you could go over the vocab, let the children dress up a doll or teddy, ask them to go get some stocaí etc.
  • If you get stuck for a word foclóir.ie is a great quick translation website :)
  • Try the folens website for some games and worksheets.

Active Home Week!

Try do as many activities as you can outside or make them active. For example get the children using chalk or sticks to practice letter & number formation, they could be jump counting..counting 10,20 etc. play what time is it Mr. Fox, play a game of simon says or Deir ó Gradaigh  outside.
The children could also take this time to practice their ball handling skills, practicing kicking, catching, dribbling, throwing a ball etc.

Reading & Jolly Phonics
27/04/2020

  • Continue revising nursery rhymes and reading nightly with the boys and girls. The nursery rhymes are important as they allow the boys and girls to practice their rhyming skills..they can be ones which they know already like 'Jack & Jill', 'Humpty Dumpty' etc.
  • This week's story would have been 'Town Mouse, Country Mouse' if you have it at home try reading it with your child.
  • I have linked the youtube video, below, which has the song to help the boys and girls to revise their jolly phonics.
  • So far the children have revised s,a,t,i,p,n,c, k, e, h, r, m & d. This week if they could revise g, o, u, l & f.
  • There are worksheets below to help the boys and girls revise this sound. Again if you do not have access to a printer these can be easily made at home.
  • CJ Fallon has made all their online resources available to parents. Here you can access our workbook 'Sounds like Phonics' and our class readers.
  • There's a wide selection of books on HarperCollins that boys and girls should be practicing reading https://connect.collins.co.uk/school/Primary/BigCatBookShelf.aspx Click on the Teacher Portal, use the login parents@harpercollins.co.uk and password Parents20! select Collins Big Cat and once there you can choose the level most appropriate for your child. I would suggest start at the lowest level of PinkA and then they can work through further levels if it is appropriate for them.

Gaeilge 27/04/2020

I know some people are keeping up the gaeilge which is super!! Any practice the children get talking as gaeilge is brilliant, as I said before don't worry if it's not 'grammatically correct' they won't know and the children generally all really enjoy Irish. The boys and girls will need lots of practise with Irish so don't be discouraged if it doesn't come back to them straight away, keep working on it.
  • We would have been revising the theme of bia at the moment, use any Irish you have to practice this..bainne-milk, aran-bread, úll-apple, uisce-water, im-butter, subh-jam. This could be practiced at breakfast (briocfeasta) or lunch (lón) or it could be done while at the shops.
  • Try the folens website for some games and worksheets.
  • We had been practicing 'Tog amach mé' for seachtaine na Gaeilge so they should remember it.

Reading & Jolly Phonics 20/04/2020

Writing 27/04/2020

  • Practice writing their name. Most should be able to do this at this stage as we did a ot of practice of this in school.
  • While in school we covered the letters c, o, a, d, g, q, i, j & l. Previously the children covered t, k & v.
  • As always ensure the children are using lower case letters, watch their pencil grip and ensure their feet are flat on the floor, they are sitting up straight and one hand is keeping the page still.
  • This week the children can practice writing the letter w.
  • Let them see you write it a few times, get them to write it on their hands & on your back.
  • Write out the letter w with a highlighter or dots and let the boys and girls trace over your highlighter or dots with a pencil.
  • When writing the letter w 'start at the top, slant down to the right, now slant up to the right and do the same again' make sure they don't lift their pencil until the whole letter is done.
  • There is a bundle of worksheets to revise all the letters, I previously uploaded this. Please only work on letters we have covered.
  • I've also linked some sheets to practice pencil control if you wish.
  • These can be easily made by yourself with of you do not have access to a printer. :)
  • Encourage them to write while they are playing..if they are playing shop..does it need a sign?..don't spell shop for them..get them to sound it out...sh..o..p. This informal learning is very important to developing their early spellings.

Maths 27/04/2020

  • Mental maths games can be a fun way to revise number work. Ask the boys and girls to count to 10, to 20, to 30, pick a random number to start counting at, count backwards (a blastoff!), take turns counting to 10..you say a number they say the next number etc., tell you what number comes before/after a number, having pieces of paper with 1-5 on it and put it in order, if you have 5 marbles and you put 2 in a tin how many should be in your hand etc. There are so many counting games and activities just doing 5 minutes of this a day will really help the children with their number work.
  • Encourage the boys and girls to go back over the days of the week and months of the year. Ask them what day it is, have a look at a calendar. Below I've added some videos to help them revise.
  • Continue working on the topic of money and getting boys and girls to play with coins. If you didn't get a chance last week try setting up a shop with an old cash register..putting old toys and things around the house up for sale.
  • The children could try some coin rubbings too. Just place some coins under a sheet of paper.
  • A really fun topic that the boys and girls generally love learning about is capacity. This a great activity to do outside. Try use the language full/nearly full/empty/holds more/holds less/holds as much as. Fill and empty containers of various sizes, discuss using smaller containers to fill larger containers, ask them questions like do you think the egg cup is going to fill this jug?
  • With capacity you are focusing on the language being used so try to emphasise this.
  • CJ Fallon has made all their online resources available to parents. Here you can access our workbook 'Sounds like Phonics' and our class readers.
  • Continue revising nursery rhymes and reading nightly with the boys and girls.
  • This week's story would have been 'The Snail & the Whale' if you have it at home try reading it with your child. If you do not have this book I have linked a read aloud from youtube below.
  • While reading discuss what the name of the book it (title) who wrote it (author)..discuss the pictures..what they think will happen next..get them to draw a picture of what happened after the story ended.

  • After reading ask the boys and girls to tell you what happened in their own words, what happened at the beginning, middle & end of the story. What their favourite part was, or try reenacting the story using puppets or teddies!
  • The boys and girls will need ongoing revision of all their jolly phonics sounds. There is a youtube video which I have linked below that revises these sounds.
  • Previously the children have revised s,a,t,i,p,n,c & k. This week Id like them to focus on e, h, r, m & d.
  • I have uploaded some worksheets they could try which are linked below.
  • Try activities like a sound hunt around the house & a race to who can think of the most words that begin with the sound.
  • Draw a picture of something that begins with a letter and if you write the word the boys and girls can try and copy writing your word.
  • Another idea might be to have a few pictures of things like an pen, pin, pat, pot etc. and then say each word slowly (p...o....t) and see if your child can identify which picture you are saying.
  • If you do not have access to a printer a game might be to use real objects..make a pile of like rubber, runner, rope & can..which one doesn't belong ..why?/why not?
  • If your running out of books that the children can read, there's a wide selection of books on HarperCollins https://connect.collins.co.uk/school/Primary/BigCatBookShelf.aspx
  • Click on the Teacher Portal, use the login parents@harpercollins.co.uk and password Parents20! select Collins Big Cat and once there you can choose the level most appropriate for your child. • This week the children can practice writing the letter v.
  • Let them see you write it a few times, get them to write it on their hands & on your back.
  • Write out the letter v with a highlighter or dots and let the boys and girls trace over your highlighter or dots with a pencil.
  • When writing the letter v 'diagonal down and then back up to make a v'.
  • There is a bundle of worksheets to revise all the letters, I previously uploaded this. Please only work on letters we have covered.

Maths- 20/04/2020

  • Encourage the boys and girls to go back over the days of the week and months of the year. Ask them what day it is, have a look at a calendar. Below I've added some videos to help them revise.
  • Please continue to revise the formation of numbers 1,2,3,& 4. We had just started on 5 before schools closed so continue to go back over the formation of 5 with the rhyme of 'down, around and put on its hat'.
  • Playing board games like snakes and ladders, cards, and doing jigsaws all help to develop mathematical skills.
  • Folensauth.folensonline.ie/login?signin=3e74084ce0c23579216a1a1a4019c5ff have made their online books and resources available to parents. Register as a teacher and use the roll number Prim20. • We would be moving onto the topic of money about now. Give the children some coins to play with.
  • Try setting up a shop at home and encourage them to use them while playing, identify 1c or 2c and getting used to the idea of giving change. Make it fun, use a cash register, put their favourite toys on sale, or maybe even something they baked?!
  • The children could try some coin rubbings too. Just place some coins under a sheet of paper.
  • We will go back over this topic in school once we're back so don't worry too much, most important thing is that they are familiar with the coins and can identify some of the smaller coins.

Gaeilge-20/04/2020

It would be fantastic if the children could continue to practice some Irish. Try even practicing 'Dia dhuit' & 'Dia is muire duit' 'Cé thusa?' and 'Is mise .......'. or any other Irish you have! These could be done using a teddy or puppet. Ask them to 'cuir lámh suas/síos, cuir a cos suas/síos' etc.. Remember any Irish they hear at all is a bonus even if it is not 'grammatically correct' they won't know! The boys and girls will need lots of practise with Irish so don't be discouraged if it doesn't come back to them straight away, keep working on it.
Try the folens website for some games and worksheets.

Easter Holidays-06/04/20-17/04/20

During the 'Easter holidays' I won't be updating the page with school work. Take this time to relax as a family, enjoy the break and hopefully the good weather too (fingers crossed!!). I appreciate that each family is unique, and are all doing their best during this strange time so in that regard I just wanted to update the page with a few ideas of activities to try at home. These are not school work just some ideas in case cabin fever is setting in! Please do not feel pressure to complete these activities, just do what works best for your family. Take care :)

World Book Day

Wow! What a day, the boys and girls made such a fantastic effort to dress up as different characters from books. I loved that so many boys and girls brought the book that they dressed up from. We had a parade in the hall so we could see all the brilliant costumes and we even had storyteller come in and read some stories to all the children.

Number Work

The boys and girls have been working on their number formation. They used different materials to make the shape of number three before we practised writing it on our hands, on our backs and then finally writing it with our pencils into our books.

Christmas Concert

After weeks of preparations and practicing the children were absolutely superb on stage. They all sang beautifully and delivered all their lines perfectly. I was so proud of them, well done you!!

Number Two

We have been practicing making the number two. The children used a number of different materials to make the shape of two.

Look at all the b words we could think of!!

Library Visit

The boys and girls had a fantastic time visiting the library! We got a big bus to drive us to the library in the village where one of the lovely librarians read a few stories to us. We even got to pick our own book from the library to bring back to school. It was a great day out.

Halloween Fun!

The children had a great time showing off their lovely costumes during the day and during our Halloween parade.

Throwing and Catching in P.E.

Aistear-The Space Station

Learning about autumn

The boys and girls have been learning all about autumn. We learned a lovely poem all about a squirrel called 'Whisky Frisky' who was collecting acorns. The children also used forks to create prints on their hedgehogs. During Aistear the children also did some investigation into chesnuts, acorns and different leaves and berries.

First few weeks of school :)
