Ms Noonan's 2nd Class 2020/21
Happy Halloween
We have been very creative in the lead up to the Halloween break this year. We practised lots of important skills while creating some fantastic Halloween crafts.
We had to be very careful making our sock pumpkins and practised tying knots with the wool to create a pumpkin effect.
We learned the careful skill of weaving while making our spider webs. We also practised cutting along curved lines with each craft too. They all required a lot of concentration and precision.
Ms Noonan made a witches potion with us and we watched as it all bubbled up!!
We really enjoyed our witches walk on Friday. There was some very spooky people around!!!
Well done to Bella for winning the Halloween raffle.

Hands on Maths!
We were using lolipop sticks in our pods to understand tens and units sums with renaming.
Africa
We loved learning all about Africa. We learned about African animals such as, the zebra, elephant , giraffe and lion. We discovered some of the famous landmarks in Africa like Table Mountain, Mount Kilamajaro, the Pyramids of Giza and many more. We learned where each of these landmarks are on a map of Africa and we even got to see them on Google Maps.
The Carnival of the Animals
We have been learning about Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals. We were learning the sounds different instruments make and learning to tell the difference between the sounds the instruments make. Ms Noonan plays us one piece of music at a time and we have to guess what animal the music is portraying and what instrument(s) we can hear. After we have discussed our ideas, Ms Noonan reads us a short story about the animal and instruments. We have a little booklet where we keep track of the animals and instruments we've met.
We have gotten very good at this!!

Sports Day 2020
Some action shots from a very enjoyable day!
Portraits
We had lots of laughs making these portraits. Ms Noonan gave us some string and we had to look at our partners and use our string to make an outline of their head on an a4 page. We traced around the string and added in their facial features!

Dear Parents, Boys and Girls,
I hope you are all continuing to keep safe and well. I miss seeing you all very much and hearing all of your stories and news. If you would like to email me with any news or messages you have for me, don't be afraid to send me an email. It doesn't need to be school-work related.
As always....
Do not feel under pressure to complete ALL work/subjects every day! Choose one or two pieces daily (if it suits) to complete. Children like routine so perhaps choose an hour each morning for sit down school work. Do what works for your family and your situation.
If you, the parents wish, you can submit any completed work to my email for feedback and/or comments. I would also love to see what activities you've been doing to keep busy. I bet you've some lovely art work done.
Please contact me if you have any queries big or small in relation to your child's learning. Children work at different paces and I can provide alternative or extra activities if necessary.
Email: msnoonanclonburris@gmail.com
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Ms. Noonan
There are a number of things the children can do daily to help keep some sort of routine while we are at home during this time.

** Suggested activities starting May 18th**
I will continue to change the spelling, sounds and tables focus weekly. The remainder of the work provided can be completed over the two week period 5th - 15th of May.
N.B. There is no expectation to get all of this work completed. We know how challenging it can be to get school work done at home. Choose what works best for you and your child.
Please don't fret if you do not have access to a printer to print off the suggested worksheets. It is just as beneficial to carry out this work orally with your child and discuss the topics using the vocabulary of the topic.
Alternatively, the children are well used to copying down work from the board in school, so they will also be able to copy down worksheets or activities at home.

Literacy
Sound of the week - 3rd June 2020
Sound of the week - or
Action - Put hands on head as if donkey’s ears pointing down, and say or.
Revise the /or/ sound and <or> spelling.
The oy spelling is usually used at the end of words.
With the children, make a list of words which use it. Then ask them to make some sentences using the word. This can be done orally or written. The words can also be written onto the toy stencils (see below) like we do in class.
Spelling List - fork, storm, horse, forty, morning, torch.
Revise tricky words - because, want, saw, put, could, should, would, right, two and four.
Revise plurals. Remind the children that a plural is more than one of something.
E.g. The cats ran quickly. The boys ate their sweets.
If a word ends in /sh/, /ch/, /s/, or /x/, the plural is made by adding es.
Wish, dish, crash, brush, church, crunch, catch, ditch, dress, kiss, pass, class, box, fox, six and fix.
You could also make your own booklet like the one shown below.
Sound of the week - 25th May 2020
Sound of the week - oy.
Remind the children that the main way of writing the /oy/ sound are ‘oi’ and ‘oy’. We focused on writing the sound with ‘oi’ last week. E.g. coin - boy. The oy sounds the same, but has a different spelling.
The oy spelling is usually used at the end of words.
With the children, make a list of words which use it. Then ask them to make some sentences using the word. This can be done orally or written. The words can also be written onto the toy stencils (see below) like we do in class.
Spelling list 25/5/20
jet, dig, help, boy, you, enjoy, annoy, two, four and destroy.

other, were, because, want, saw, could, should, would and right.
Sound of the week - 18th May 2020
Sound of the week - oi.
Action - cup hands around mouth and shout as if to another boat, oi!, ship ahoy!
Remind the children that the main way of writing the /oi/ sound are ‘oi’ and ‘oy’.
With the children, make a list of words which use it. Then ask them to make some sentences using the word. This can be done orally or written. The words can also be written onto the pictures of oil cans (see below) like we do in class.
Revise Adverbs
Read the story attached and fill in the missing adverbs. This can be done as an oral exercise.
Spelling list 18/5/20
bug, had, film, oil, coin, noisy, toilet, would, right and boiling.
Revise tricky words
more, before, other, were, because, want, saw, put, could and should.
Revise Adverbs
Look over the list of verbs you came up with last week and/or the pictures you have drawn to match the verbs. Make up some sentences together using verbs. Explain that just like we use adjectives to describe a noun, we use adverbs to describe a verb. This can be done as an oral activity.
E.g. ‘They swim quickly’, ‘She eats loudly’, ‘He reads quietly’.

Maths - Addition and Subtraction
The children will now be finished their MYM books. You can go back over it for anydays / tests you might have missed along the way. Our Planet Maths book has lots of pages similiar to MYM, if you want to try some of those instead.
Maths mosaics are a great way to promote maths in a fun way. Please complete the mosaics below. (Addition/Subtraction)

Maths
This week the children will revise patterns in maths. You can make your own patterns using things in the house, for example, spoon, fork, spoon, fork etc.

Maths- Place value
This week the children will revise place value in maths. This is an important foundation in maths. The class was doing a great job in school and it is important to keep this firmly in their mind.
25 - 2 tens and 5 units. (20+5 i.e 10+10+1+1+1+1+1)
The children will remember doing these activities in class with blocks and with lollipop sticks (making the numbers on their white boards too). We counted the lollipop sticks and tied an elastic band around 10 lollipop sticks to show 1 ten. We used these bundles of tens and single lollipop sticks to represent units. We had lots of fun with Ms. Cogan helping us during this topic.
203 = (2 hundreds. 0 tens and 3 units/ 100+100+[0 tens] +1+1+1)
Again, please do not pursue the hundred, tens and units if your child is not able yet. That is work for next year.

This week the children will revise place value in maths. This is an important foundation in maths. The class was doing a great job in school and it is important to keep this firmly in their mind.
- Tens and units, or Tens and ‘ones’ as you will see it referred to at times, helps the children when doing calculations and to read and understand numbers.

- You can quiz your child by writing a number down and asking them to explain how many tens and units make that number. (numbers from 01 - 99)
- If your child is very comfortable with this concept you may continue to the hundreds.
- However this is not a requirement, only an option. If it is too difficult for your child to grasp. Do not pursue it. This is work for next year. Your child is up to speed with the 1st class curriculum.
203 = (2 hundreds. 0 tens and 3 units/ 100+100+[0 tens] +1+1+1)
- You may quiz your child on these as well. “How many hundreds, tens and units in the number 189?”
Again, please do not pursue the hundred, tens and units if your child is not able yet. That is work for next year.

After looking and learning about the history of Clondalkin last week, and learning about different sources of water in Clondalkin previously such as the Canal, the River Camac, the lakes in Corkagh park, we are going to concentrate on learning more about our locality this week through looking at different bridges in our area and in the wider world.
Let’s start by having a look at some famous bridges around the world. Can you think of any that we learned about already (hint: Australia). Click here to learn more about this bridge click here. https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/au-t2-g-569-sydney-harbour-bridge-fact-file
Or maybe you’ve seen or even walked across some nice bridges in Dublin City Centre such as the Ha’Penny Bridge. Maybe you could research the Ha’Penny Bridge to learn more about it. http://www.bridgesofdublin.ie/bridges/hapenny-bridge/history

Sound of the week - 11th May 2020
Sound of the week - ow (Action - Pretend your finger is a needle and prick your thumb saying ou, ou, ou). Remind the children that /ow/ and /ou/ can make the same sound, just like they learned last week. Example mouth - brown. Revise the ow spelling and the ow sound. With the children make a list of words which use it. Then ask them to make some sentences using the word. This can be done orally or written. The words can also be written onto the pictures of owls (see below) like we do in class.

Revise tricky words
who, which, any, many, more, before, other, were, because and want.
any, many, more, before, other, were, because, want, saw and put.
Revise Verbs - a verb is a doing word (I ran, he sang, she jumped, we play).
Remember that if we can put the word ‘to’ before a word, then it’s probably a verb. E.g. to sing, to play, to dance, to eat.
Why don’t you practice your verbs by doing some actions with them!
Write the letters of the alphabet A-Z down along the side of your copy. See if you can come up with a verb beginning with each letter. Example - act, bake, carry, drive…. etc.

11th May - Gaeilge - Mo bhreagáin
To keep in line with RTE school hub on Tuesday 12th May, this week the class will be revising the names of different toys (bréagán). They will do this through the colouring book (leabhar dathúchán). There is no requirement to print out these pages. Your child could write the name on a page along with its picture. maybe pick 3/4 words a day.
You can extend your child’s learning by putting the words into sentences. e.g “Is/Ní maith liom teidí.” “Tá/Níl teidí agam.”
5th May - Gaeilge - Aimsir
This week we are going to revise Aimsir (weather).
We loved answering the question "Cén sort aimsir atá ann inniú?" What is the weather like today?
We always tried to guess what Mr. Murphy was going to say over the intercom before little break.
I have added the phrases below that we had on our aimsir display in class. Try to tell the weather each day to your parents. Use the pictures to help you remember.
Hopefully the answer most days will be 'Tá an grian ag taitneamh'.
Draw your own picture for each type of weather.
Don't forget to put a heading for each one!

Maths - Spatial Awareness
Also linking with School Hub Monday 11th May, we will be revising words associated with spatial awareness.
You can ask your child to draw a picture. you give directions and test their understanding of these terms. e.g. “Draw a table. Draw a pencil under the table.
Draw a chair behind the table.
Draw a girl beside the table.”
Spatial Awareness: in front, behind, between, on, beside, under.

History of Clondalkin
Clondalkin is a village steeped in history. Why not involve yourselves and your children in finding out more about your hometown. Take a walk through the village and see if you can find the Old Cinema, Tully’s Castle, St. Brigids Well, St. John’s Church … Or maybe look up some interesting facts about The Round Tower and Corkagh Park.

Dear Parents, Boys and Girls,
I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Easter and ate plenty of Easter eggs! Well done for staying at home as I know it's not easy. I hope you are all keeping very active and making the best use of your time off to get creative and try out some new things.
Due to the continued forced closure of the school, there are a number of things the boys and girls can do at home, with guidance, to progress their learning. This is also a great opportunity to revise what we have covered so far this year.
There are a number of things the children can do daily to help keep some sort of routine while we are indoors at this time.
Homework for 27th to 30th April 2020

Homework for 27th to 30th April 2020
- MYM week 28 Mon - Thurs 1-12.
- Tables -12.
- Spellings 3 per night (see below).
- Draw 4 pictures with 'ew' words (see below).
- Write 4 sentences with 'ew' words (see below).
- Spellbound wk 28
- READ every day. Keep a list of the books you've read (I have provided links to free e-books below for those of you who may have finished all of your books at home!).
**Suggested activities starting April 20th**
I will change the spelling, sounds and tables focus weekly. The remainder of the work provided can be completed over the two week period 20th - 30th of April.
Literacy
Sound of the week - ew (makes an /oo/ sound). This can be a difficult spelling because it often makes an /oo/ sound, as in ‘grew and flew’. Remind the children that ‘ue’ ‘u_e’ and ‘ew’ can all make the same sound (blue, tune, blew). 'Revise the ew spelling and the ew sound. With the children make a list of words which use it. Then ask them to make some sentences using the word. This can be done orally or written. The words can also be written onto the jewel shapes like we do in class.

https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/t-l-54654-ew-phoneme-spotter-postcard
Sound of the week - ea (makes an /ee/ sound).
Remember 'when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking'.
Revise the ea spelling and the ea sound. With the children make a list of words which use it. Try to stick to 'ea' words which make the /ee/ sound. Then ask them to make some sentences using the word. This can be done orally or written. The words can also be written onto the teapot shape like we do in class (see above).
(E.g. sea, leaf, beans, beat, seal, bead, meat, read, seat, teacher, steam, treat, etc.)

Spelling list 27/4/20
sun, held, few, flew, grew, chew, because, want, newspaper.
Spelling list 20/4/20
met, web, spin, tea, heat, leaf, each, who, which, seaside.
Revise tricky words
27/4/20 *why, where, who, which, any, many, more, before, other, were*
20/4/20 like, have, live, give, little, down, what, when, why and where.
See how many times you can find the tricky words during the week and count how many you find.
Let's see who finds the most!
Revise adjectives - a describing word e.g. The red chair. The bouncy ball. Try to come up with your best sentences. Lots of opportunity for oral language here (see sample worksheet above).
E-Books
Maths - Time
You can print and cut out the clock pieces to construct your own clock (See pdf below). Parents can use the clock and move the hands. Parents may ask their child questions such as, “Can you show me 7 o’clock?”/”Can you show me half past 8?”
The child can move the hands of the clock to display the time they were asked.
If your child is doing very well perhaps show them and explain ‘quarter to’ and ‘quarter past’.
After plenty of practice and explanation a parent may ask questions such as “Can you show me quarter to 3/past 3?”
Parents could also ask their child a question like “Half 4”and the child draws a picture of a clock and displays half 4.
Gaeilge - Éadaí
RTÉ school hub is covering éadaí on Monday 20th April. Be sure to watch it back on rté player if you miss it!
You can print or draw these worksheets down onto a page (see pdf below). The first few pages are to do with clothes.
The children can match the clothes with the correct word.
They could do a page each day or second day if they like. There is also a word search to further use the words and a picture of a boy and girl they could label and colour in.
Visit Folens online - Abair Liom 1st Class - click Resources - click Theme - click éadaí - click póstaer - here you will find games and songs and poems which we have learned together in class based on this topic.

As there are quite a number of different water sources around the Clondalkin area, we thought we would involve the children is some active learning involving learning about water and different habitats found near water sources eg pond life. However, as always, safety is of utmost importance so please ensure your children are supervised by an adult when doing any of this active work.

** PE with Joe! Monday - Friday @9am LIVE on YouTube The Body Coach TV. #PEwithJOE **
Find his channel and videos here : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ
Although you will be indoors a lot, it's important to get outdoors as much as possible, when it's safe to do so. It might be tempting to play on your tablets/playstations/xbox's frequently over this period but try to reduce your screen time as much as possible. Play some games outdoors, go on a scavenger hunt, look for signs of spring and record what you see.
While indoors, play some board games, make jigsaws, get creative with lego, play with your dolls, find new uses for recycled objects.

- Write a daily diary entry. Include plenty of adjectives to describe what you did or saw each day. Include how you are feeling each day. Don't forget 'I' gets a capital letter when you are writing about yourself e.g. 'My Mam said I could play after my schoolwork'. Write the date on each diary entry so you can look back on them when you are older!

- Encourage your child to use the reading strategies used in school. Before reading a new book or story, make a prediction based on the picture of what the story might be about. During the story can they make some 'connections' to the story (using Cara the Castle Connector'. They might also use 'Queenie the Question Queen' to ask questions such as Who? What? Where? When? and Why? during their reading.
- They could perhaps write their own alternative ending to the story OR what might happen next....
- There is a fantastic story writing competition running at the minute which the children might enjoy. https://johnboyne.com/short-story-competition/
- Choose a sound that we have learned previously ('igh', 'oa', 'ie'), maybe one per day and look out for that sound in the books/stories you are reading.
- If you visit the TWINKL website which you are guided to on the homepage above you will be able to gain some fantastic resources for FREE! You can search by class -1st/2nd and then you can search what you're looking for e.g. 'igh' word games, spring, verbs. adjectives etc. I use this website every day in the classroom and you can find a wealth of resources here.
- Practices some spellings you find difficult and become more familiar with the sight words. https://sightwords.com/sight-words/games/bingo/
- Practice your verbs, nouns and adjectives and use them in your writing.
- As we had just started procedural writing (how to do something step by step). You could write steps on how to brush your teeth, how to make breakfast, how to tie shoe laces, the list is endless!
- Learn a new poem/poems, talk about why you like/dislike it and draw a picture to match it. https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poems/children

- Weight - grams/kilograms. Have fun in the kitchen weighing some items from your cupboard/fridge. Guess which items are the heaviest / lightest and put them in the order you think they go in. Weigh the items individually (with your parents guidance) and see if you were right! Maybe you could help weighing some ingredients for baking nice treats! **
- Folens online (how to create an account is on the homepage. We use Planet Maths for 1st Class. Go to resources and see some games to suit different topics.
- Money - we have just learned about money. If you have some change in the house, we have learned how to use coins and to make up to €1. They could make a shop like we did in school, and use coins to buy items from the shop and work out the cost and change.

Don't forget to help out your parents at this time and do some chores around the house. You could help by cleaning up your toys, tidying out your wardrobe/drawers, setting the table, washing up, maybe you'll even learn to bake something new together.
Stay Safe!
I'll see you all again very soon!

All about money
We had lots of fun learning all about money in maths class. We can now calculate cost up to €1 using all of the coins. We also started to learn how to calculate change. Our 100 squares came in very handy for this. We set up a shop in our classroom and took turns in being the customers and shopkeepers in small groups.
Spring is here
We have been learning all about the signs of Spring. We loved creating our very own Spring scenes.
World Book Day 2020
A huge thank you to the parents who helped the children with these wonderful costumes for World Book Day. We took part in a parade in the hall, where we got to show off our favourite characters. We chatted about our favorite characters/ books in class and then wrote and drew about them too.
We love reading in our classroom and each day we had 15 minutes of D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read), to allow us to read more of our favorite books.
We also took part in a school readathon over the week. In total, our class read over 85 books!! Amazing readers!

Pancake Tuesday
Before Lent began, Ms. Noonan brought in some pancakes for us to enjoy. We got to choose our favourite toppings to put on. They were so yummy!
Australia
We learned lots of interesting facts about Australia and the animials which live there. We worked in groups and researched Australia on the tablets. Ms Noonan gave us a list of questions to find the answers to. We really enjoyed this project. Look at the cute Koala bears that we drew!!

Grandparent's Day 2020
This is always a very special day of the year. We are so lucky to have such wonderful grandparents and we love to share our school life with you. Leading up to grandparents day, we had lots of fun 'interviewing' our grandparents about their lives when they were kids and comparing it to our lives! It gave us the opportunity to look at toys from the past and even hobbies and food! Thank you so much to all of the grandparents for participating!
Lava lamps
Before we made our lava lamps we predicted what was going to happen. These were really fun to make! If you want to try this at home you just need - vegetable oil, food colouring, water and an alka-seltzer and water.

Space Week
We were truly blown away by the amount of space projects brought into school this week. Each project was unique and we learned so much from them all. We had a show and tell where each child got to come up and talk about the project they made with their parents. Learning about space was fascinating! We really enjoyed it! We even created our own moons and space scenes during art.

We are learning about different kinds of weather and this week we were talking about the wind. The wind is a force that can move things. We decided to use our own wind by blowing into a straw to try to move different things in the classroom. Science Week
This week was Science week in school, and the theme for Science week was Ice. In Junior Infants we did our experiment on how we could stop the ice from melting as quick as it usually does. Some children picked tin foil, and others picked paper and newspaper to wrap their ice in. Then we timed how long it took for the ice to melt. We found out that the tin foil helped the ice from melting quickly. We also experimented with salt and ice and the salt dissolved the ice making it melt.
We had great fun being scientists!!

Stretch!
We read a story called 'Stretch' in school this week. After we read it, we wanted to see who was the tallest in our class, so we put ourselves in order of height. It was fun to see who the tallest people were. We talked about being different - how we all look different and like different things, but we are still one big family here in Room 2.

Is your bucket full?
We read the story 'How full is your bucket' in school this week. We are all bucket fillers in this class which means we are all kind and nice to each other. We don't want to be a bucket dipper, which is someone who does mean things to others. When we are happy our buckets are full and when something bad happens, we are sad and our buckets are empty. So far we all have full buckets and we are all bucket fillers.
Music with Sinéad
Sinéad came in again this week and we got to play some instruments! We played things like the tamborine, the cow bell, the triangle and the shakers. Sinéad said we were the best class at using our instruments and listening to teacher. Well done everybody!!

The children had a great day dressing up for Space Week on Wednesday. Some of the children from our class dressed up as planets, stars and even characters from Star Wars. We had great fun and our teacher took lots of pictures of us all.
