Mr Ryan,s 2nd Class 2019/2020 Learning at Home Activities
Dear Parents,
I hope you and your families are keeping safe and well at this time. During this difficult period, it is important that the children continue with their learning. The Learning at Home link above includes lots of useful activities that the children can engage in. As always, they can read and write regularly at home as well as practice their tables and problem solving skills. Below I will lay out some activities in certain subject areas that they can also engage with at home.
I will continue to post activities and work on a regular basis over the coming weeks so please check back in regularly for these updates.
This is also a great opportunity for the children to learn basic life skills at home such as taking care of themselves, tying their shoe laces, helping around the house etc.
Hope you all remain safe and well and I hope to see you very soon.

First Holy Communion Message
Hello boys and girls,
I hope everyone is keeping safe and well. Hope you have all received your postcards by now and enjoyed reading them. I know we were supposed to celebrate our First Holy Communion on Saturday the 16th of May and we were all very excited about it. Unfortunately the date is postponed for now but I hope you all enjoy your day tomorrow with your family. Don't worry, your special day will come and it will be even more exciting and special when it does. It will most definitely be worth the wait. Ms Hyland, Ms. Ruddy and I thought it might be a nice idea to post our own First Holy Communion pictures. I'm sure you will all have a laugh at them. Can you tell me apart from my twin brother?

The topic of the rainforest in SESE allows for lots of discussion with your child about what is going on in the world today. You can discuss the importance of the Rainforest for providing humans with oxygen, as an important home for many unique and endangered animals and also touch on the issue of deforestation.
The children may also come across some new tricky vocabulary such as: canopy, ecosystem, temperate(cool), tropical (warm), vegetation, endangered and deforestation.
You can showcase your learning by putting this work together to make a little project if you wish and maybe even present it to their family!

Maths
As RTE Home School Hub are exploring the topic of Data in Maths for 1st and 2nd classes this week, here are some ideas of what parents can do at home to support this topic:
Remember Data is a fancy word for information!
You can collect your own Data through surveys and questionnaires and present it nicely on a graph. There are many different types of graphs but we are learning about block graphs.
Let your child decide on a topic/idea they would like to collect data on such as the family’s favourite ‘sport/fruit/chocolate’ etc.
Encourage your child to ask each family member the question and record how many people vote for each one.
You can use coloured blocks or coloured pieces of paper to make the block graph on a page.
You can ask questions such as ‘Which is the most popular/least favourite?’, ‘How many more people preferred oranges to apples?’ and ‘How many people were in the
You can also give your child a simple set of data and ask them to represent it using the pieces of coloured paper/counters etc.
A simple set of data may look something like this:
Eye Colours in my class
Brown Eyes - 9
Blue Eyes - 7
Green Eyes - 4
Hazel Eyes -3
Have fun collecting data and making your own block graphs!

Gaeilge
As RTE Home School Hub are covering the topic of éadaí (clothes) this week for 1st and 2nd Classes here are a few ideas you can do to revise this topic as we have completed it in school already:
Encourage the children to name as many clothing items as possible such as t-léine (t-shirt), bríste, bróga, stocaí, sciorta, gúna, geansaí, léine (shirt), carbhat (tie), bróga reatha (runners), bríste gearra (shorts).
Encourage the children to tell you what they are wearing everyday using the “Tá geansaí orm” agus “Tá bríste orm”.
They can include the dathanna (colours) then to say “Tá geansaí dearg orm agus tá bróga dubh orm’.
They can also practise writing the sentences “Tá sciorta dearg orm” etc.

SESE
This week we celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday 22nd April. We have decided to focus on the theme of Our Environment and look at different ways we can care for our environment and combat issues such as climate change. Earth Day, which was established in 1970 in the US, is celebrated on 22nd April each year. It is a day to think about our planet and what we can do to keep it special; to think about saving water and energy, reducing pollution, recycling, protecting our animals, trees and plants, and generally getting kids interested in protecting their environment
Here are some quick ideas for celebrating Earth Day with your children:
Below I have included some useful links to some reading material and activities that the children might enjoy engaging with. You can discuss topics such as recycling and the 3 R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and also rainforests and ways in which they are being harmed and what we can do to help them. You might have fun researching an animal found in the rainforest and complete a fact file based on this animal.

In our 2nd Class Window on the World SESE books page 62/63 (which can be accessed on the My CJ Fallon website-link above), there is a chapter called Barry the Bin Man which the children might enjoy reading about the problems caused by littering and all about recycling. There are also activities to be completed on the topic.
For extra Science activities the children might enjoy learning about heat and temperature and also electricity. We can talk about ways in which we can save electricity (much like the water conservation work before Easter).
These can also be found in our Window on the World books
Heat and Temperature page 34/35
What is temperature? Talk about high and low temperature and what we use to measure temperature. There is also a fun experiment on heat insulation- finding the best material to keep your cup of tea/ hot chocolate warm.
Electricity page 42/43
There are also fun activities in the book on the topic of electricity. Each activity involves using static electricity. Discuss the uses of electricity but also importantly the dangers of using electricity at home and other places. As mentioned before We can talk about ways in which we can save electricity (much like the water conservation work before Easter).
Here are some quick ideas for celebrating Earth Day with your children:
- Plant a tree
- Go for a bike ride or a long walk
- Hold a nature "scavenger hunt" (send the kids out into the garden to collect - or spot - various items on a list you provide)
- Talk about saving water when brushing teeth and saving energy by turning off the lights when you leave a room
- Bake your favourite cookie or biscuit recipe and let the kids decorate with icing to look like the planet earth
- Set up a recycling centre in your home

Literacy
- Children can continue with their Spellbound work and do the daily activities as usual. Start a new week next week.
- For this week children can revise the weeks they have already done and pick 4 words to make interesting sentences with
- Write out a daily schedule every day
- Write diary entries every second or third day
- Have a family story writing competition
- Host a family 'Author's Chair' where children can read what they have written
- Encourage your children to read every day
- Listen to stories on Youtube
- Write a book review on books the children have already read
- Have a family 'read-aloud'
- These choice boards may come in handy. The children can choose their own reading/ writing activity for the day
Maths
- Continue with Master Your Maths Daily
- Revise number facts and tables every day. Learn off tables from +1 to +12, -1 to -12
- Revise skip counting in 2's, 3's, 4's etc.
- Revise friendly numbers e.g. 3+7=10. 6+4 =10
- Go on a 2D and 3D shape hunt inside the house and in the garden
- Create a shop at home.Price up items you have at home, add totals and calculate change
- Telling Time-Children find this topic tricky. Ask them the time throughout the day- o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to
- Measure the weight of food items
- Measure the lengths of different objects around the house
- Problem Solving- read written problems and try and solve them independently. Use MYM for example problems
- When problem solving use the RUDE Strategy
- R- Read
- U- Underline ( important words)
- D- Draw (a picture of the problem)
- Estimate- (Guess the answer)
- Then solve the problem
- Below is a choice board based on maths activities which you may find useful
SESE(Science, Geography and History)
Our theme for the month of March is Water. We had learned all about the uses of water and methods of water conservation. We had started the water cycle so the children can continue to learn all about how this works and can conduct their own experiments and make projects on these topics.
The CJ Fallon website allows free access to their books online and I would recommend using the Small World Second Class book which covers the topic well and has a variety of useful activities. It also has lots of work covering the topic of Spring.
The link to this website is below and should be very easy to access.
https://my.cjfallon.ie/login/index
Twinkl is another useful website which allows free access to their excellent resources and you will find lots of useful resources for the topics suggested below on this website. I have attached this link also:
https://www.twinkl.ie/sign-in
The children can engage in Project Work on these topics and can do their own research, write about them in their copies or make fun posters with facts and drawings.
- Suggested Topics
Water Conservation
The Water Cycle https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/au-us-sc-314-water-cycle-in-the-bag-model-science-experimen
Floating and Sinking Science Experiment - Small World
Using recycled water bottles to create bird feeders/ plant pots etc.
Spring ( Trees, Plants and Animals)
Complete a project on your favourite animal
Planting Seeds- What do plants need to grow
Conduct interviews with people in your family to see how life has cahnges ( phone interviews in some cases)
Research a country ( Learn about the culture, lifestyle , food and climate)
Easter SESE Activity- Easter Egg Treasure Hunt Map
Children can have a lot of fun with this one and be as creative and imaginative as they want. They must draw a simple map of a small area (e.g. back garden) and mark off where the easter eggs/treats are hidden or include clues as to where they might be hidden.
The children may find it challenging at first to visualise the map of the area in their heads so may need your help. Skills such as their Spatial Thinking and awareness and sense of direction will be improved greatly during this activity. It may be best to start with a small area (e.g one room) This can be done several times and as the children get better at drawing their maps, they can maybe expand it to include a larger area. ( e.g. different rooms in the house) Enjoy the treats at the end!!

Art
Children can practice their drawing, colouring and painting while at home. They can practice by colouring some everyday objects at home or fruit bowl still lifes for example.
There are also a variety of competitions and challenges available for kids which can be found online and on Twitter. I have linked a few of these pages below.
One artist Will Sliney sets simple drawing/ colouring challenges every day for children and these can be sent back to him on Twitter.
